just thought I'd share one of my script logs from today.. this will give an idea to the non DAC users just how fast these names get snapped up..
My script sent an email to register this domain the moment it dropped.

the email will send as long as the response from the DAC indicates that the name is available..

problem now is.. I've become less obsessive about domains.. but more obsessive about tweaking my script, tuning my TCP stack & mastering sendmail.....
"anybody know a good divorce lawyer" :)

needless to say I didn't catch this one.. so it's back to the drawing board!

yes quite literally its milliseconds and not seconds that count!

i too missed a couple of names earlier this morning - both of which i was scanning at 120ms intervals for!

Am I missing something, why all the emails:confused:

You're going to get yourself blocked if the DAC doesn't respond pretty quick to your queries.
no your not missing anything..
I'm still playing around paul.. the script will stop before i send too many emails..

If I am not calculating wrong you had sent 7 emails in a second which makes 142 ms. People send 1 ms emails believe me. I assume you also query dac with same speed. People query dac with 25 ms.

the point of the post was to give some of the non DAC members a visual feel of just how quick these things get snatched.... the script wasn't running at full capacity....

I've been a DAC member for a few weeks now and seen a lot of bleating & bragging posts about how fast scripts are.. with 1ms here and 1ms there etc....etc... yet the biggest percentage of members on this forum don't have the pleasure of seeing the DAC in action.. I just thought it would be cool to share..

you've scared me enough but still tempted to give it a go....not to catch anything just to build a script - be the Donald Campbell of the DAC world :D

if we're talking ms then dont you have to find a host as close to the nominet IP as possible so minium number of hops to make connection? - seem over the top but if ms is all we're talking about?

Ping is king but Just how fast is fast considered for a server?

I ping dac.nic.uk from server at around an avg of 1.8 ms and min around 1.3 ms.

And from my house its avg 12 ms.

How fast is everyone else pinging?

Yes kool to share thanks...

I am new to this the first name we watched was invent.co.uk and we missed it due to slow email sending. Unless I am missing something could you please let me know

Why do people care about the ping times. So far as we can see the slow links are the dac query at 400ms gap per query assuming an even spread and the email send at 20ms - 60ms with invent we witnesses 900ms response on email delivery presumably because some people send in 100's of requests at once. In our initial trials ping has nothing to do with it although we get <1ms to nominet.

What kind of times are people getting an email delivered and 250 confirmed in? and are you querying the DAC evenly across the day or focusing on specific hours?

If anyone knows of any hard names to catch please let me know as we are just trying out or software and want to see if we can catch in the next few days anything. just missed bungle.co.uk too :(

Brendan

How do you know you just missed Bungle ? I was checking it every 120 ms and for all I know I could have been number 50 with my email, even when I can send an email in 13ms.

there were probably several other people after the same names.

thats the risk you take - go for a big name with the high chance of missing it - or go for a smaller one instead (and hope everyone is after the big names) and have a much better chance of getting it.

i fail to see how you can send a mail in 13 ms and recieve a 250 code back from nominet unless you are using a server I don't know about. Even in slow times we have only been able to complete a mail in 20ms at best.

When I said just missed I meant tried to get and didn't along with invent.co.uk.

Does anyone have any feedback or comments about time to send a mail to nominet do you use both rav and mx2 ? or one or the other? rav seems faster normally but with a big name it looks like everyone goes for that and mx2 is a bit quicker.

It seems that on a busy name 60ms+ is the delivery time we are getting for a mail but we are still playing around I guess we have a long way to go...

The Domain Availability Checker (DAC) is available to Nominet tag holders who are also members. The service enables you to make high volumes of queries about the availability of domain names. Once you have connected to the DAC you can send one or many domain name queries to the system.

http://www.nominet.org.uk/other/dac/

Yes, you write a script to automate domain registration.
