How do the countless names like these attract money? I get that they must do, because otherwise why would they have value at auction (unless it's a bubble), but I haven't worked through in my mind, why meaningless digit-strings like these are attractive. They obviously generate money but why?

The top list, which Ben posted first, I can see those names could be useful and attractive. But the ones that Posh posted - what makes them valuable?

Just search beta.companieshouse.gov.uk for any of those 3 letters
A lot of companies and organisations use them.
The shorter the domain name, the more valuable (for the right client)

There has been hundreds of LLL's drop recently so the market is saturated at the moment and thousands more expect in the next few months.. I lost all the good premiums which in hind sight i should have gone for given how many LLL's are on the market.

Thanks guys - I hadn't thought of the company names dimension. (I'd still prefer Military but then I'm in names for their development and my tag is not-for-profit.) For a lot of you, this is your income (or part of it). For me it is projects and end-user development. I guess I could try to monetize my domains and websites, but I've never bothered.

Ok so take one as an example sna.uk - if your name was Susanah Nancy Appleton ...you might want a short private email address [email protected] that you could give to people. More likely though, as has been indicated, there will be a company e.g. Strategic Network Alliance that will pay for it....

Clearly this would be a bad time to put them on the market. But give it some time and... cha-ching!
That’s why I’ve left LLL’s alone, there’s tons of them about.
I had them low on my priority list as well. Only chased 'special' ones like inc, esc or any

Personally I wish domainers were more into swopping and running swop lists on some kind of platform. There must be all kinds of names that people caught which aren't as interesting to them as ones that others caught and vice versa. Person A caught Karl.uk and Person B caught Birdwatchers.uk, but they are each more interested in the other person's domain, because by the nature of name-catching they get a range of names of varying interest and value.

Susannah, Here is the perfect domain to fire off the platform, i would +1 that: domainswop.co.uk + domainswop.uk - Available to reg ;-)

domainswap.co.uk and .uk also available, but not sure you need a platform for this. Could easily be done here on acorn (already happens away from forums).
