Is it just my imagination or has the quality of dropping domains tanked in the last week or so.
Is it just a slow period or have the Big boys started hovering up the good domains on there TAGS.
I don't really scan far in advance has anyone noticed any of them moving stuff into there own name yet.

Really poor quality at the moment mate that's for sure so not your imagination.

Yep, defo pretty poor this week, haven't noticed domains being retained by registrars but haven't really been looking.

It's because we've hit the Christmas period.

Ah yeah :)

That aside, this thread lead me to dig a bit deeper and I notice that name.com are now auctioning off their expiring .co.uk domains at namejet. Not sure how long that's been going on or if it's in line with nominets terms:

Select .co.uk on this page and leave the search term blank: http://www.namejet.com/Pages/Auctions/BrowseDomains.aspx

Not just that, the quality of domains on the 60 day lists have also been incredibly poor over the past week or so.

Unless Im reading something wrong they are listing eifx.co.uk as Prerelease.

The domain expired on Feb21st and is still within the 60day renewal period.

With just over 14hrs till closing time how can they be selling this?

That was my point, a load of the domains aren't even suspended yet, guess winning bidders may only get the domain if the current registrant doesn't renew. Looks pretty dodgy tho!

They have playfrivgames.co.uk listed and it only expired 3rd March

It's interesting that they are listing stuff like this already I wonder will any of the other big boys go down a similar route

Yes won't be long before the big registrars all take advantage most will start renewing the best names then auctions will start this will happen in time...

Would auctions be an awful thing? Might actually kick start the market as (ordinary) people get used to buying domains which have previously been registered.

Can someone else what you are talking about? Is this part of the new registrar policy that allows them to continue falling domains? Does it mean that the registrar can prevent a domain from being dropped, but they have to sell it and can't keep for themselves?

No.

An Accredited Channel Partner can help themselves to expiring domains that are on their tag (i.e. registered by them)

However, they have to:
A) Get the EXPLICIT consent of the previous owner (how they have to do this is not defined)
AND
B) Allow the existing owner to renew right up until the point the name would have been deleted, had it been in the regular drop cycle

But assuming they find a way to get the consent referenced above, they can help themselves to the domain any time after it has expired.

They aren't suppose to be able to take control of the domain without explicit consent of the registrant.

No registrant is going to give explicit consent lets be honest.. it's going to be a very rare thing.

I'm hoping nominet will take actions against registrars who abuse their Accredited Channel Partner tag classification and demote them to just a channel partner at very least.

I noticed this a while ago so stopped drop catching.

I think the game is going to be changing anyways....

Does anyone fancy tag changing one of their valuable .co.uk domain names to a registrar once it has become accredited and then letting it pass its expiry date before watching it go to suspension and up to day 91 before making a song and dance to renew it just in time? That's one way to test whether a registrar obeys the rules.

A sting operation, I like it!
