I wanted to raise something which kind of leans into azooza's thread of a similar name but didn't want to detract from dale's own thread.

This relates to the 'reputation' feature of vbulletin and its use on acorn domains.

Recently a member of this forum was behaving in a childish manner towards a couple of other members with his comments, that I felt it necessary to report the posts for abuse and leave him negative reputation which simply stated 'grow up'. His posts where as such that they ended up getting pulled by a moderator.

Now during this period the long standing member (who I shall not name as I don't want this to be a witch hunt thread) responded to my negative reputatio. in kind with negativeness for me . He found the most mundane post of mine which was valid and in context of the thread in question and left me negative rep with the comments 'spammy - stop wasting bandwidth'. The post which he did this to is this one: http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/non-u...ite-xx-xxx-revenue-quick-sell.html#post238331

I only noticed this recently and thought it not only childish in behaviour but also against the spirit of the forum as well as the reputation system itself.

I raised it with alan via pm as I felt it unfair and have sent 2 pm's about it so far but had no response and the feedback remains. Granted the second pm I sent to alan was this morning but the admin has been active since the initial query and am slightly put off by his lack of consideration. Apologies alan if you've had too much on to look into it up to now.

It's only a slight thorn in the side but if it's alright for people to simply return negative rep simply because they received some for being pathetic and childish then surely the system is floored and shouldn't be taken on board as useful tool for the forum.

I wondered what others thought on the issue and whether or not you would even consider it an issue (albeit slight) to take up with admin?

Thanks :)

Reputation feature should be anonymous across the board, that way if you do receive negative rep it won't or can't be taken to heart. Would prevent flair ups.

I also think the reputation scale or gradient is to short. I see members on here with "reputation beyond repute" and think to myself 'yeah right'

Yes I agree with this too. Not sure it's a design feature of vB but yes in theory very good idea.

The whole reputation system on vB is rubbish. Whats the point. Whats it based on (ill answer that, random peoples idea of how reputable you are based a few words). What happens as a result of it?

I have had neg rep from a member as I posted a joke in a thread (someone was asking about something happening on 31st April (which doesnt exist if you dont spot it) and I posted as a joke they were dropping all LL.co.uk that day. Even had a wink smiley on it! But obviously someone (who shall remain nameless here) didn't get it and called me an idiot with red rep!

The trader system on the other hand is good. It is based on a set of pre defined protocols and procedures and deviation or adherence is documented and allows other to decide if they want to enter into a trader with a user.
That should be used and promoted more!

Its not though as negative trader rep can be deleted.

The whole thing either needs sticking by and done legally ie. Unmoderated so alan is fine, or its moderated and I can sue if someone leaves me a neg :)

Over active and hyper sensitive moderation can be the legally worst thing a forum owner can do !

Obviously posted for my benefit. This is the thread http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/drop-...-catch-required-31-04-50-ncnf.html#post238335

I asked for a link (further info) and you weren't forthcoming, so gave neg. rep. Word chosen could have been less harsh, so sorry for that, but my overall experience from your participation/input was negative.

Yes there are flaws but the ratings are based on an actual sale so its a little more procedural. Rep is based on someones emotion towards a post.
One addition would be the ability to dispute or reply to a rep mark like you can in eBay. But its never going to be perfect as it cant be properly audited. You would need a middleman to over see the sale fully for that to happen.
Does neg trader rep get deleted very often?

Well it was aimed at that post yes, though I wasn't going to name you.
And in response you asked for a link at 12:01, someone had responded by 12:30 saying 31st April doesnt exist and you your self had responded at 12:48. So in the time between me posting it and next reading it, it had been rumbled and you defiantly knew so posting a link or explaining it again would have been patronising.

Fair enough you though my input was negative. My personal thought is you were annoyed you were taken in by the joke and in that moment you emotionally responded with a neg rep and that is the flaw with the rep system. The fact it is not based on knowen and accepted social standards and procedures but peoples immediate reaction to a post.

It doesn't appear so as I'm still waiting on a response from admin :)

Apologies jimm and foz, I didn't intend on this thread to be a public airing of personal neg reps left between users hence why I never metioned the userin question. Hope it's a temporary blip in an otherwise peaceful existence all round.

It just niggles me that the system is flawed and yet no one is available to actually have accountability, see the issue for what it is and make necessary changes. When people get petty and leave a neg rep just because they've had one (through their own idiocy) it may only serve to put people off the system all together.

Yeah been a bit busy this week with my job guys so will catch up on people's gripes this weekend for sure.

I'm getting a lot of this lately so need to sit and read all the threads and comments and decide what to do.

There are 2 sides to every story so it's often difficult for me to decide who is right and who is wrong, and who am I to be the only judge anyway?

Honestly to this date I didn't get it, that is theirs no 31st April. Just shows what a muppet I am. From memory the neg rep was given day(s) later so it wasn't heat of the moment stuff. More annoyed with the dicking around, what with Denic.de a few months earlier giving seven days notice and releasing the lot, so I was on all ears alert mode. Now the LL's and reserves are going to consultation/feedback before a decision is made.

No need to apologise! Im only using this example as I personally thought it to be a prime example of a flaw in the system.
Im not bashing or berating Foz and aplogies to Foz if you think I am! I honestly just wanted to use this as an example where I have been on the dirty end of the red rep sick.

Though the rep was left less than a minute after you posted.
But its in the past and It was just a prime example where I felt the system was flawed. As I say I dont want to berate you. :)

No problems here, just proves my point that anonymous is the way to go. The user and the comment(s).

I view the reputation tool as a confidence voting tool, not as a mechanism for personal attacks.

Hi guys,

Sorry but I can't agree with an anonymous reputation tool. In my view the reputation button should go completely.

Some years ago I felt compelled, as a Christian, to ask some of the other acorn members to cut out some of the xrated language, jokes and other stuff that was going way beyond the mark. I received negative reputation for my stand. I was a little irritated at the time but didn't retaliate.
