This technology is becoming increasingly popular, with products that allow for internet use in the car, outside, and in buildings that lack hotspots. It is similar to satellite cards, but allows for the technology to be wireless so that you can use several internet-enabled products at once and/or use products that do not easily take a wireless card such as gaming devices, printers, and cameras (e.g. on a family holiday with multiple users, business meeting outside the office, people who work outside the office but need full functionality, etc.).
The term is also used for specific products, such as portable internet radios.
