Personalised/Cherished Registration Plates

Looking to buy a personalised/cherished registration plate for my car - does anyone have any recommendations on who to avoid/use?

Shall I go straight to DVLA or use one of the many other services out there?

I seem to remember there's an AD Forum Member who does this too (is it you, Mat?!).

Have a look on ebay first, I got "B18 ONE" for £100 and have been offered upto 2k for it since, so some bargains on there at times.

Then got to dvla-som.co.uk then if it isn't on there goto the big companies.

Some of the big companies just list the reg's that are on dvla-som and pass them on at higher costs, so best to check dvla first.

I have J4MEB (JAMES) if interested, looking for around £3000 mark...

I have bought two - one from DVLA and one from ebay... no probs with either... theres also a forum - pl4tes.co.uk i think - its pretty good ..

Got my plate through ebay (DRO 1D), but like any large purchase makes you a tad nervous when you have sent several thousand quids to a stranger and then have to wait several weeks for anything in return.

Worked out ok for me but I think should I do it again I would take the money and meet the seller and oversee the transfer.

I found DVLA fine too, just like domains though, virtually all good ones are taken.

Have you thought about www.regtransfers.co.uk , most of the plates on their site are open to offers.

My plate starts with BMW and I got it on Ebay for £500 which I was pretty happy with.

The plate brokers sell both their stock, other peoples stock and dvla stock.

It is always going to be easier and cheaper to buy dvla stock directly from the dvla. The brokers own stock is priced up quite well but the commision markup they put on other peoples plates is far to much really.

The 2 places I would recommend are NationalNumbers.co.uk and Carreg.co.uk

Ebay is fantastic for plates because you are buying directly from the seller, not having to fork out commision to the plate brokers. There is also quite alot of selection on ebay, you really can get bargains.

Another good place to look is theplatemarket.com where you can talk directly to the seller.

Try and stay away from Irish plates, the best investment is always a true dateless cherished plate.

Go onto the DLVA auction site, some bargains going for sure. Dateless plates go cheap - this is where they all buy their stock from! Mate bought a N LLL for a few grand.

I bid upto £500 with the intention of selling it on but im not prepared to pay any more for it and reserve is still not met, ofcourse if someone wants this on their car bid up and hopefully get a bargain. Pretty funny plate but not my cup of tea
