Hi, just wondering what your opinions are on a geo domain for a large overseas city on an org.uk? The domain is due to drop quite soon, thinking I might book it with a catcher, but not sure as it an org.uk. The population of the city is in the millions, Google keyword tool says there were 22,200 exact searches last month.

The search results for it in quotes are very healthy on Google UK and it has some add support:

Results 1 - 10 of about 74,100,000 for "city name here" (the web)
Results 1 - 10 of about 3,550,000 for "city name here" (pages from the UK)

Your thoughts?

Alright Kev,

I found some Spain towns/cities available in .co.uk with a population of 54k on 1 and 140k on the other, as they weren't popular tourist destinations i didn't bother with them.

A place which as a population of millions BLOODY HELL !!!
I don't expect you will be the only one trying to catch it.

I would say go for it mate, if the site only ever sells Loney planet books and maps of the place you will do ok.

We both know that .org.uks rank well and fast :)

If your paying £35 to £40 give it a shot, the population is huge

Good Luck with that mate

NB* note my sig links ;)

Well, yes, I agree with James, if it is popular with tourists it will be easy to develop. But there are other concepts and ideas that might make it worthwhile, eg. if it is Toledo or Solingen, you might try selling those steel products on such a specialised site. If it is Dresden, you could try selling the porcelain BUT DON'T MENTION THE WAR ...

WTH I'm saying that if it is famous for something, it could be worth the money to sell specialised products, if you have the links to do that.

I recently found this Belgian ad agency

Testnet Online Advertising - Home

which has some things worth selling, and might be useful. Trouble is, their "multi-lingual interface is not yet fully developed". To put it another way, I do English, French and German, so I can understand a lot of what they say in Dutch when their English/French runs out - and it does not go far.

Thanks for the replies, it's not really what you would call a tourist haven, tourists will go there like anywhere else, but I suspect it's mainly backpacker and adventure holiday type tourists and business people, but that's not it's main focus from what I researched last night. Couldn't find any visitor numbers for how many UK tourists visit the place, and I spent a few hours on Google looking

It's more a financial centre for business, I would compare it to New York city, only a lot bigger, it does have a few good things going for it, such as large expo's every year with upwards of 80,000 people who exhibit there, it has a big festival every year attended by a lot of people, there are plans in the making for a large attraction to be built there soon.

I'm not sure what I could do with the domain, apart from making it an information site about the city and the country it's in, and stick Adsense on it, or just try and sell it on if it was caught, not sure what to do yet, book it in for a catch or leave it, hmmm

[edit]

Correction, it's not, 80,000 people who exhibit there, it is of course 80,000 attendees

Even if it is largely business traffic, you can still advertise local hotels and put tourist info on there. Hotel bookings are good for commission ...

And if it's a business destination the hotels will be pricey so higher commissions, and the airlines that go there will be more likely to have an affiliate scheme (e.g. KLM, Swiss, BA, Air France)

The thing is, I have no idea how many people from the UK travel there on business or for leisure, I can't find any figures for that at all on Google.

Ah what the hell, just booked it with www.dropsystem.co.uk

Well, I had it booked with 3 cathers, but caught.co.uk caught it.

The domain was shanghai.org.uk, largest city in China with over 20 million population and 8th largest city in the world, would have been a nice one to have :(
