Okay done some emailing around for some two word generics domains with reasonable offers - now got a reply with an offer to sell at a price that's not cheap but not expensive... £850...

Just wanted to gauge whether worth a punt based on some limited info :

---

Two word generic in a reasonably solid vertical - not finance or phones, but not flash in the pan either

CPC - £0.54-£0.75

Broad G vol monthly 1.9m
Exact G vol monthly 38000

Other closely related areas range from 2k - 150k exact matches.

is .co.uk and unhyphenated

Has a few affiliate programmes that i can choose from

---

Worth it or not?

I know it's a bit difficult but I am looking at the 38k and figuring 10,000 visits a month x 20p earnings per visitor....

Cheers
TW

If you advertised the name on here for £850 would it sell?

There's always a numpty somewhere that would buy most half decent names ;)

This is one of those self-doubt moments as sounds to good to be true that's all. Just trying to get a handle on whether going mad or not. ;)

Google keyword volumes are worth a check but can also be totally wrong so don't let that be the deciding factor.

ratboy makes a good point and I'd place more weight on that kind of evaluation.

If you reckon it's going to make you £2k a month then there isn't much to think about but I think perhaps those figures are very optimistic.

Email me if you want a second opinion... promise I won't stiff you.

Yes they are a bit - and I know that the G volumes are sometimes out (I own skincareproducts / co/ uk and it still says 500k exact searches... we are no.1 for "skincare" and "skin care" versions and do not get that amount of traffic..... :| Nice one G.... ;)

Anyways - I am pretty sure for this two word term even if G is 30% out, the potential is there. I think I am talking myself in to realising it is a good price ;)

It's useful being on acorn. Tinky I've been emailing you about skincareproducts. I'm out.

If your getting 30 visitors a day i suggest you take the offer you said you've received.

You never asked for traffic mate - if you had, I'd have told you - I don't play dirty! If I did, I'd have sold to the previous offer who also didn't ask either. Don't ask, don't get - that's like buying a second hand car before you've driven it!

I always said we are not looking to sell and don't need to sell. We have a game plan and we didn't pay for the domain - we're also reasonably good at SEO, as the listings on G prove, which is where the inherent value lies for future (as well as the value of a good generic).

Beauty stuff is not our core business and whilst we already have a couple of off network deals to promote products and brands, if we got a figure that was a good price, then we'd sell. Pure and simple. I find it's much simpler to make money that way than having to work at it.

The figure I quoted you was, and is, the figure we'd ditch all the work done so far on mapping out, seo etc. We'd be making a very good price - you'd be getting a good generic domain and basic website that's well listed and ready to work on - for a few weeks work, there is no reason why the domain shouldn't be making over £1k a month easy.

My point is exactly what you've just found - Exact match data that is erroneous. Albeit we have discovered that our CMS has altered the goog code and therefore the stats above are not actually 100% correct, but there's no way 368k exact searches a month!

those numbers seem very weird. I have sites with much lower exacts, that are on page 1, but not position 1, which get many more clicks than that. Have you tried different titles or description text to see the affect? Maybe you are somehow putting people off, or something else in top few is grabbing your share as well?

I can't see how 500k equates to 30 a day.

Hi Steve

It's a bugger - we've tweaked the Meta description from which G takes our description to show on search results - it must be because it's summer ... all 499k women and men who would potentially see us at number one must be away drinking away the credit crunch...

We added in a few brands, made no real difference, changed the content around made no difference (apart from dumping us down 8 resuilts for a week or two).

The site is pretty bare - but there's no where near even 10% coming into the site (to then disappear when they realise there's not too much there at the moment).

Hey ho...

skin care products broad and exact are the same number. sure sign of dodgy numbers.

Also google insights show "skin care" getting approx 10x the searches of "skin care products".

not having a go tinky, you can charge what you like. Just saying those stats make your price look like deal of the year.
I know they can't be trusted but didn't expect figures that far off!
Is there any other way you can check the stats?

Adwords.......

or server performance? maybe it gets slow at times and people just give up and click stop/back/close?

Or maybe Google's wrong! But it's certainly been high 300ks for well over a year now, so not a new issue if it is wrong.

The data from Insight does suggest a lot lower figure, when you compare it against other terms in the category:
Web Search Interest: "skin care products"

So which tool gives more accurate information & how does the data differ between Insight & Adwords? Albeit you don't actually get any actual search volume figures from Insight, just a trend graph & the ability to compare terms...
