Ive started a project for a Domain Management System.

I wanted an easy place online where I could monitor domains I own. Log if a domain expire soon, dead or just for information. Being online the site could email / SMS when a domain expires or hosting dies for some reason.

(o)DMS

Im hoping to have this uploaded for open development somewhere but still early days. For now ive just written the site eyecandy site,
insert domains via multiline textarea,
d delete domain from site,
c check site http status code (initial idea from http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/domain-tools/49870-site-resolve-checker.html)

links not active rel=nofollow to prevent link spam

feedback and thoughts......

Update 10/06/2009
Finally finished the scripts for bulk whois & http status lookup
Also list 15 domains at a time to improve page load times while viewing (first previous next last links)
The backend still limited to 1000 domains for lookups keeping within Nominet AUP.

purg that sounds like a great project. Being online it'll work on macs too (if you decide to distribute the webscript/sell it.

Would also be good to have a research section of the site to enter a list of keywords/domains and track the availability status, age, PR, etc...
(I have something like the latter already but the script is very buggy and doesn't do the age/pr bit yet...)

Good luck

Thanks for the ideas (I have a working age/PR script on the expiring.org.uk site I could reuse)

For now ive done the basics.

- Add domains
- Record/view http status
- Record/view whois infomation
- Delete record

Next would be bulk http/whois recording then onto whatever comes to mind.

I often wondered how sourceforge worked.

Well it sounds like your project is moving forward. I'm amazed with the number of domainers out ther that there isn't a complete management system out there already. So maybe yours could become the standard!

Good luck - I'll keep checking back. If I had more time I'd like to help - but my plate's full.

Thanks for the encouragement as I too was unable to find such a domain tool.
Im able to push this project so far but like yourself unable to run solo the whole way. Real life is more important also trying for a new job.

Being open source I hope others on here would assist so we could truly create something worth putting your name against. I know many on here asked about bulk whois, checking and auditing so aimed to pull this all together into a single product.

Ive now uploaded the base to which more tools could be added. Ive written bulk http_status checking which will be my next step closely followed by the bulk whois scripts.

problems at home have stopped this project for a while. Will come back another day.

updte to site

  • Created an ajax whois to automate checking expire dates
  • Fixed a bug in http status script
  • Blocked search engines and other bots from the lookup links

The ajax whois script was limited to fit within Nominet AUP and Terms. Using ajax assist looking up many domains without refreshing the page. Basically click lookup, walk away and make a coffee (4 mins for 1000 domain). The script has a 0.25 second delay which forces things stay with Nominet 5 domains a second AUP. Because this script is for personal use whois2 shouldnt be used.

http staus bug was the removal of some domains. This was in the script for testing but forgotten to be removed.

Blocked bots by changing some links into javascript requests. This has the effect of stopping automated crawls from sections of the site. In the real world the webpage would be offline so not an issue.

Next update would be to ajax the http status scripts.
