The (UK) numberplate "M1" sold for £331k which was, apparently, the highest ever price paid for a numberplate.

Sure, M1 isn't a name but I wonder why first name / surname domains don't seem to go for higher prices as it strikes me that these would appeal to the kind of person who would want a private reg.

Has anybody considered linking up their first/last name domain names with a numberplate dealer? If someone's looking for a plate to match their name then it would seem rude not to also sort them out with a domain name!

Any experiences here?

I've seen them advertised in the newspapers where someone must have registered numerous surnames or surnames with family attached i.e. smithfamily and they were selling you your own email address i.e. john@smithfamily etc etc

My 1st motor was 132 KKX a Ford Anglia 1959
I bought from John Britten Garages Arkley cost me £20
I used to make the "Arkley SS"

Useless information 4 the day: previous record £250k for K1NG followed by £109k for S1NGH

I think that's a nice idea (Can't find an icon to portray "and I'm being serious").

Or how about everyone having their car reg as an e-mail address so the GATSO fines can be sent more efficiently! ("...and now I'm *not*...")

Yeah, there are some seriously vain people out there... If they're rich enough to want a private reg that reflects their name AND they also use email then surely they're rich enough to understand the "importance" of a firstname/surname domain name.

Sure they could get xxxfamily.co.uk or whatever but it's nowhere near as cool as without the family bit.

Food for thought anyway.

I was lucky enough to get my family name as a .co.uk about 6/7 years ago (the kids thought it was cool when they were teenagers - now they just text) - but it's hard now. We've registered quite a lot of "the(familyname)s.co.uk" or whatever, which is another compromise.

Do you find much interest in .name?

Some comparisons between Number Plate and Domain market...

Both only have one of each name
Both have governing bodies (Nominet and DVLA)
Both charge transfer fees
PreNoms > Pre 1963 plates (3 number + 3 letters).
.org.uk > Irish registration plates (cheap private plate)
Typos > Strategic placement of black screws to change shape of letters. The favourite of Boy Racers.
