Multi-year registration periods

//On 1 May 2012 we will be introducing multi-year registration periods so that .uk domain names can be registered and renewed for between 1 and 10 years by member registrars. This will see the following changes being made to our systems.//

Implementation of a new charging structure:

//Single year = £3.50 + VAT.
2+ years bought together in a single operation = £2.50 + VAT per year//

Quite a few other changes too:

The number of WHOIS domain registration status statements will be reduced from 7 to 3 leaving:
Renewal required (for domains that have expired)
Registered until expiry date
Registration not required (this is the status when the 'do not renew' option is selected)

The following status statements will be removed:
Registration request being processed
Renewal request being processed
Renewal invoice being processed
Registered until renewal date

Is there really a huge demand for single year registrations?

I'd have preferred a discount on multi year, other than "fire and forget" I can't see any advantage to multi year.

agreed
if 1 year was half price of 2 years then fine would have been good for flips

also should a slightly discounted rate for 5 years plus

good thing is for your very best domains, worth putting 10 years on a handful I guess in case anything happens to you and can't renew or die
then your kids can get them later

mind you I have dot coms worth stacks more than any of my .uk and still dont add 10 years lol. i try to add 3 or 4 years ahead on the best

It's high time the transfer rate came down to a token quid or something for security as 12 is way ott
no other registrar/country on planet charges for transfers as far as I know
not sure how they are still getting away with it tbh

10 years, is a statement = This name will not drop, get your cheque book out if you want it. :D

Might help sales.....

agreed

plus professional dropcatchers will hate this
which kind of thrills me lol

I'm looking forward to 10-year registration terms for our babies.

10 years = an initial spurt in paper profits to glory in, then the wilderness years!

100% agree. Certainly getting "ahead" on registrations by anything beyond the "standard" 2 year term that most people are (and will probably continue to be) familiar with sends an uncompromising message that you fully intend to keep the name, come what may...

Great development.

1 year registrations for speculative registrations, new technologies, events happening that year etc...

10 year regs for domains your really sure about. Plus... And I dont know if its true but I heard that Google uses the registration period as a factor in their rankings.. A domain regged for multiple years is more trusted then a domain just regged for a year or two.

As said, I am not sure if its true but it could be a ranking factor.
