What happened to the proposal of an additional section listing .uk domains for sale, with paid access?

Acorn has become best resource for people with an interest in uk domains, including some regular buyers and sellers. The free “domains for sale” section is fine for sellers who contribute nothing to to the forum.

There are sellers who would pay to use a separate public section. This would make life easier for buyers who can quickly scan the paid listing, and then have the option of trawling through pages of other names for sale.

The charge for access to list names in the paid section need not be high, but a subsequent downwards adjustment will be easier than an increase.

Over time the forum would get more visits from domain buyers, and an additional income to cover costs.

I must admin, it is annoying when your post only stays on page one for a few hours before it is drowned out by 'lesser domains' shall we say.

I can add it but had restistance from other members to anything that costs money or excludes them.

Perhaps a poll will solve it?

I thought the best solution was a sales section where someone paid a nominal fee to post a name for sale.

That would restrict the number of names posted for sale in that section. The quality of the names would obviously be higher and it wouldn't reduce the number of potential buyers from viewing names for sale

Any money raised could be used to fund some regular Acorn get to gethers

We already have one in the exclusive section

I think a section where you pay to post, but anyone can read is key.

We dont want less people seeing our names, just want to make them more prominent and not get lost in the clutter...

i also think if your an exclusive member then you should be able to post in this area for free ;)

Objections from users who feel they would be excluded are ridiculous.

Everything stays the same, but you add an option for people to list their names more prominently, if they choose to pay a nominal fee.

The exclusive area is only visible to people who pay £100/year, no passing buyer is going to join just to see what might offered there.

a sales subscription to post and all can view is a good idea. but then we will be on the scale of how much does admin charge? if it is too low the same crap will still go on, if its too high no one will subscribe?

so ideas/suggestions welcome on cost to admin :)

yeah its a real fine line.

although to be honest the more it costs the better the names listed (well in theory)

we need to make the cost PER NAME listed i think. Or someone will pay the £x and just list all their s**t together ;)

The logic has to be that the names themselves are SUPPOSED to be of averagely higher quality in the new section. The folks who own those better names ought to be able to pay a reasonable fee no problem if they want to, based on better sales and higher PPC earnings from their stable of better quality domains.

So something like 50% of exclusive might be appropriate. Give access to the extra forum free to exclusives, and there's a half-way house for serious domainers with good quality names who want to showcase them more readily, but without the other benefits of exclusive.

Too cheap and the whole exercise is pointless since you end up with a mirror of the current Sales forum...

In summary, have 3 forum membership levels:-

Regular (free) - as now
Enhanced (50% of exclusive) - post to the new for sale forum
Executive (as now) - all the current benefits, plus post to the new for sale forum

Even the "Regular" members get to participate in the biggest .co.uk domain community in the world - they just don't the few extra goodies...

again the only problem with it being a one off fee (or annual fee) is that even people with dross names can stump up £50.

hummmmmmmm

not sure there is going to be a simple solution.

do you charge a yearly fee
a fee per domain listed
bit of both
neither and have admin decide what can be listed (that will keep you busy haha)

The best model would be a pay per post rather than a one off subscription.

A different solution: install a VB hack that only allows 1 new thread per registered user per 48 hours in the existing sales forum AND which also blocks new posts from "bumping" threads.

That still allows each Acorn member to potentially have 15 sales threads (each with any number of domains in them) every month, but it keeps the sales area that much tidier and doesn't cost anyone anything.

The "no bumping" modification also means that you don't have to keep seeing the same junk at the top of the list of threads with new posts if you've already taken a look at it and decided you weren't interested...

And since it's automated, there's no extra burden on Admin and the moderators!

Edwin's suggestion of three membership levels is good. A charge per post may further restrict undersired activity, but may be awkward to administer.

With any rules there will always be a minority who ignore them. However, the forum already works well, thanks to the efforts of Admin and mods.

We seem to agree on the benefits of a new section and how it should work. I am confident that Admin can iron out any issues that may arise.

I disagree that anyone with a bunch of crap domains would pay £50 whether they could afford it or not - I think they would just move on, so I agree with Edwin's suggestion.

havn't had time to read the whole thread but i would suggest a paid section yes, sounds good, but do it like DNforum, where unpaid members can post under the original thread, if you get me.

So a sellers posts his domain for sale and then he still has the benefits of a bigger customer base, and it cuts out all the duplicated posts also.

And to have a paid section where just paid members have access to will not be that beneficial, also more content to read so the forums guests will stay at the forum longer

just my thought on this idea

Best thing to do is stop moaning... otherwise posting names will cost where as its free now. :)
