If you were aiming at the global market is .net a strong enough extension to rank well in search engines and gain good type ins?

Its the 4th most popular TLD on the web. It gets less type in for sure but its totally fine IMHO to launch a business on if you cant afford millions for the best .com

If there's a .net domain that you have your eye on and .com is unavailable, I certainly wouldn't let it put you off.

I would say the 2nd best TLD after .com, to me the only TLDs worth bothering with are .com, .net and .org, what's the other one you use Tom ?

Anyway yes .net is fine, definitely one of the best alternatives.

I have a new mobile phone site on the .net. It was ranking 1st, it's now around 8th, but it shows they can rank.

Yeah, definitely. It's one of the more trusted extensions. If there was a .net I was after, and the .com was taken, I wouldn't hesitate for one minute.

I think the most popular TLD's in order of total registrations are:

.com
.cn
.de
.net
.co.uk

I don't know about the popularity of .cn and I know there's been some good .de sales but I wouldn't bother with .de because I don't know the market but I bet Sedo love 'em :p

.co.uk is a SLD not TLD ;)
