I've only been catching for 6 months, so I'm still new to this, but am I alone in feeling utterly frustrated by this..

I've bought a whole load of dropcatcher slots and some speculative email software, and I haven't caught a damn thing in 6 months!!

I keep losing out to the same old faces - it is demoralizing.

Is dropcatcher any good, I did some research before I bought all these slots, and it seemed it was "up there with the best" - but on reflection - it can't be can it.

... and as for speculative emails, well, compared to the DAC - they're probably near useless.

The point of this thread 1) to let of steam, I feel better now. 2) I need someone to tell me it's worth carrying on with this

Well, you're acting in competition with others here, so don't expect too much support!

Glad to hear you're feeling better, but it is a frustrating game, and probably only worth carrying on with if you enjoy the challenge!

I've also never caught a scrap with Dropcatcher, I understand the reasoning behind this though and to be honest i'm suprised they ever have been able to compete (Well, since the introduction of the DAC anyhow).

I'm not saying the dropcatchers scripts aren't upto much, but they only get the same amount of queries on the DAC as anyone else, but they have a much larger list of domains to catch in a single day so the chances of them catching the domains is much lower.

I'm quite happy picking at the reg fee domains still until my TAG application is complete, then i'll worry about it :D

I'm afraid it is not worth you carrying on.

OK, that is even less support than I was expecting :)

It's up to you, DT - if you enjoy hacking around with code, then keep going and compete. If you're not enjoying it then find something more fun to do!

Someone had to be honest. Not catching a thing in 6 months is a pretty big hint that your time is better spent with other activities.

Catching one word generics and 10K+ domains will be near impossible, but I havent been doing this long and I have a few one word generics... but what is far easier is catching traffic domains with backlinks.

Yesterday alone I regged 3 domains with good backlinks and reasonable traffic.

LOL yer your being too selective you myst be trying to catch the 25K+ domains :p

Guess ive reg'd 400 in the last 6 months.. some make money, most dont but overall all im still in profit.

I am afriad there is a few true factors here, why would dropcatcher catch a domain name worth 5-10k for the price of £35.00 or how ever much they cost these days.

What might be in an idea is to value the dropping name, then half it as you not the end user, and then maybe half it again as the cost of the bounty.

Email the top catchers and put it across to them.

Best of luck!

Great suggestion. Why not just ask them to sell the quality domains they already own for a quarter of their true value, i'm sure they will all jump at the opportunity

Yes this was a sarcastic post, couldn't resist.

DT, I'm not in to the domain catching business, I rather just buy and sell domains as a hobby, however my main line of work is writing software mainly in Perl, so pm me the exact specifications that you want in a drop catching script and if I find the time I will write you a new one for free.

Also your lack of catching might not even be down to the script, it could be a number of factors including your server specification, setup and tactics.

However well-meaning, your post kind of misses the point. Drop catching is a moving target. The usefulness of the DAC for drop catchers is expected in the near future to be surplanted by EPP, so it's really not so much about specific solutions, as it is about keeping up at the back :)

P.

The DAC may well be redundant in the near future, but in the meantime alot of names get snapped up by a handfull of TAGs that will never come up for reg fee ever again.

So we can all hold out of the next big thing but will it matter come then?

Why are people getting the idea that the DAC is finishing soon, its only just been launched?
