What do you use to keep a record of your monthly revenue/expenditure?

I want to find something that's easy to use so I can see how much I've earned from Adsense, writing content etc. so I can see how things are going :)

Thanks.

I'm old school and use an Excel spreadsheet.

However, would be good to move to the cloud one day. Google Docs is a possibility that I haven't looked at but I don't know what the backup options are.

Rgds

Jamie, how about a pen and a piece of paper, two columns showing in and out :)

Haha, yeah maybe I should go back to basics for this sort of thing!

I've read a lot of blogs and people have fancy pie charts and stuff about their revenue which I wouldn't mind doing :)

Excel is best and most simplest option - can create all the fancy piecharts you need too :)

Pen and paper is proper old school ;)

I honestly don't see the need for spreadsheets and pie charts for something like this :)

Yeah, wasn't just pie charts though. Mostly graphs I think, would be nice to see whether you're doing better (or worse!) than previous months.

definite supporter of excel here!

Point of it for me over pen and paper is I can see improvement over time instantly in the form of graphs. Set it up to populate automatically.

I use two spreadsheets in Google Docs.
One is for accounts for this tax year with running totals for credits, debits and balance. The other is 'Monthly Commissions'. Months down the side with the networks across the top (with running totals).

If you're looking for an online accounting package I've used both Kashflow and Clearbooks. Kashflow is quite good and handles paypal transactions well but I have switched ot Clearbooks as I find it very intuitive and you can semi automate repetitive tasks like reconciling repeat payments from bank statements etc

FreeAgent and Xero also get good reviews, and there are a few out there that are more geared towards less complex freelancer accounting and invoicing too.

dont worry about recording anything. Just worry about the three weeks at the end of the tax year when you have to screw about finding everything!
