I'm willing to pay for images for our website headers / logos etc. I thought I could use istockphoto but the images they licence can only be used for editorial purposes. Can anybody suggest where I can find images which I can safely use?

Thanks
Stephen.

Looks OK in their standard licence? Point 3 says:

on–line or electronic publications, including web pages to a maximum of 1200 x 800 pixels for image or illustration Content or to a maximum of 640x480 for video Content;

Or try 123rf.com, graphicriver.net, photodune.net etc. Lots others but not at my PC at the moment. :)

I've always thought iStockphoto was fine for using images in any way you like, so long as you're not reselling etc?

Try www.canstockphoto.com

Check istock's terms, because their standard license covers:
Online or electronic publications or uses, including web pages to a maximum image size of 1200 x 800 pixels; video image size limitation is 640 x 480. Any size reproduction is acceptable with substantial changes to the content

It may just be certain images that can be used for editorial only - as decided by the owner.

In istock's terms it only says images under standard license cannot be used for
Electronic templates for resale on websites, brochures, business cards, e-greeting cards, etc.

Thanks all - the more I read the more I don't understand. I did get an answer from their support which said I couldn't use them for site theme headers. I have gone back with some more questions.

Thanks

Is it just photos you're after? If not, graphicriver.net is amazing :)

Why not take some photos yourself? After all, photography is fun!!

Rgds

Get Jenni to do them, hers are great!

Got 400 sites to populate! Think I am sorted now with canstockphoto.com - they are about the only ones I could find that are crystal clear about what you and can't do.

I've head horror stories about Getty Images coming after you so just tidying things up across my portfolio. Worth spending a few quid rather than being hit for £1000s down the line.

When the summer holidays come will getting my teenage daughter working on photos to earn herself a few quid from her dad.

Cheers
Stephen.

Aww thanks, I'm still learning though.

These are pretty good: http://www.webmaster-deals.com/deals/1000-stock-photos-only-9 (there are some other sets on there too).

No problems with commercial use either, but if you have any questions they are really fast at replying.

.

If I'm not mistaken I think Getty own istock now!

Yes they do, which is all the more reason in my opinion to make sure you use the images according to their terms otherwise you would be a very easy target for them. When I asked their support about using them within my sites headers etc they did say no, but then the support agent might not really have understood my question!

For canstockphoto.com - I have been told it's definitely ok for their images so going with them. And they are a fair bit cheaper.
