I don't get why people spend fortunes on names like 2777.com. I might be missing something, but it all feels a bit tulip mania to me.

Remind me again why it's a good name for them - is it just because of lucky 7s?

The number 7 (七, Pinyin: qī) symbolizes “togetherness”. It is a lucky number for relationships. It is also recognized as the luckiest number in the West, and is one of the rare numbers that is great in both Chinese and many Western cultures. It is a lucky number in Chinese culture, because it sounds alike to the Chinese word 起 (Pinyin: qǐ) meaning arise, and also 气 (Pinyin: qì) meaning life essence.

So 7.com and 777.com are valuable - I completely agree.

But 2777.com? Worth $218k?

Nah. It's all tulips :)

I remember a mate swapping an 2 yr old Audi TT Quatro for a number plate which were his initials and 786, I never got that either, so not sure I get his whole number lark either.

It's another case of last one holding the ball. All this started when major Chinese players came together and created a false demand for all sorts of random .com's; make some tidy margins on the way up (as others did), then sold out. Unfortunately some are still believing the hype, and sales like that of 2777.com just about sum it up; they've bought a very expensive ball!

Because smart you can aware the real value of a good domain name more than we

So whats with 2666.com then, at 218k ? I don't get it either... It just seems utter madness, more money then sense maybe?

Interesting theory that some rich chinese play the market. Kind of like the movie boiler room, buy stocks, run up the price, then sell out before the crash.

The same thing that happened with the .mobi flop, the 4 letter bubble, the global extensions, uk rollout etc. Some people will be left broke but the people who created the hype will be rich.

can someone start a hype on 17 character number/letter combos. I'll be rich I tell ya !

Likewise, if someone with influence (not Nominet) can make .uk happen, that would be super, thank you.

How about Cristiano Ronaldo?

Saw that during 'Big Fat Quiz' - channel 4 a few days ago - think it's the first one I've seen on prime-time tv!

It would have interesting if they'd have deliberately chosen the .uk over the .co.uk but it looks like the .co.uk is owned elsewhere.

I think the uk will happen, but most likely a slow burn till the co.uk rights to own tie in ends
