Malicious mobile phone applications have become so effective at ripping users off that criminals are now producing kits to make it easier to create new versions with a few mouse clicks.
According to the BBC, the DIY systems allow fraudsters to easily set up a web page that hosts an app which looks official but actually contains a code that takes advantage of premium rate text messages to steal cash.
Once the criminals have created their malicious application and hosted it on a website, they then send out millions of spam messages to try and fool users into visiting and downloading the app.
The good news is that because malicious applications created in this way are usually simple and all quite similar they’re often easier to spot than other more sophisticated cybercrime attempts.
