Hi All!

Top forum!

I've written a script that today caught whitsundays.co.uk and cdinserts.co.uk
it missed the good stuff - I am trying for mvm.co.uk tomorrow, just so I can feel disappointed when one of the usual suspects snaps it up and makes me feel inferior again!

Can anyone tell me if they were going for either of these domains? Do you think I faced competition, or if I'd left it a day, perhaps I'd have picked them up through 123-reg and saved myself a lot of time and effort!!! ;)

Thanks all, and good luck with your catches!

Rich.

I doubt anyone else was after whitsundays, cdinserts is not one to get excited about I'd put that down as a modest catch.

mvm will be on every list, and you wouldn't need to observe many recent results to see which two catchers get the best names.

Rich,

Wouldn't bother trying to catch the LLL.co.uk, will almost certainly go to 1 of 2 catchers.

Instead concentrate on less premium names, you may be lucky and still pick up a half decent one.

Mark.

I was watching cdinserts - you would have faced no competition on that. It's worthless.

On the subject of mvm - it was registered before 1996, so it won't drop. Nominet have to go through a manual process of trying to find the owner before they can let it drop.

Thats not correct, prenom domains dont technically exist anymore as all the domains registered pre 1996 hve now signed up to Nominets terms and conditions. mvm should follow the same drop cycle as every other domain.

Although probably no or little competition for it, according to the Google adwords tool it does get some search volume and has quite a high cpc of £1.50. So I would say the domain was worth at least something, and could certainly earn a few quid with a minisite.

It's not easy to make blanket assumptions. One man's meat is another's poison. I know people who are building a portfolio of niche domains; not necessarily ones that everyone and his/her dog is after.

It's the part of this business that makes it interesting; trying to predict what will be valuable in the next few years. The competition on known good words is too hot unless you have a good budget and the ability to drop catch consistently.

Lots of new niches are going to be worth LOTS of money. You just got to spot which ones ;-)

For once I have to agree with azooza. I picked up quite a few domains free to reg in the days of deleting which are doing ok and have paid for themselves.

I'd love to have an holiday in the whitsundays, just couldn't handle the flight until they can knock me out this end and wake me up the other!

Stender, you are quite right. There's gold in the hills. I mean, it's no good having mvm.co.uk in your DAC poll because you really know that you're not going to get it. The market is open now for the imaginative catcher.

I do agree with that.

Niche portfolio groups is the way to go. Get the less obvious ones - but get lots of them.
