I was just wondering after Dale's comments in another thread about 67% success rate in catching names , if it's a level palying field when it comes to drop catching .co.uk domain names ?

Do all persons being able to access the nominet servers get an equal shot on grabbing a dropped name ?

It depends how good your script is and how many hops between your server and Nominet.

Other than that there aren't any known loopholes right now (some have been discovered in the past)

admin please delete if the obvious shouldnt be posted.

If I had a drop catching service and a real gem was to drop. I could consider flooding competitor port 43 / 1043 addresses with real nominet replies. Its udp traffic so would be shocked if this already doesnt happen? also I would have thought Nominet would block a host for x mins if you faked the flood from a competitor address.

The internet has never been level on any other topic so neither would this area imo.

The 67% is probably based on the names booked. I could claim 100% rate if I was catching one rubbish name a day :)

I am not having a crack at Dale's system at all (the WHOIS gives that all the promo it needs!) but to claim uneven playing field on such stats is incorrect.

Dirty tricks in catching?! Never...!

There was one well known catcher who mischeviously used to send ACCEPTED emails to people on a few top names. I think that was more a joke than anything else as he didnt both to hide his IP :)

It is quite funny how blinkered some people get, for example attempted logins to my servers with other tagholders usernames and I think Caught.co.uk had a catcher hack their stuff as well.

It is worth remembering this is dropcatching, not the cold war....

Correct Rob, currently 60 - 67% of names *booked* across the system. Whois won't actually identify us as the catcher for clients that use our hosted service, nor will a probe for sub domains :) There are apparently lots of nutty tricks out there and nuttier people attempting them I think.

so which (public) server provider is closest to Nominet in terms of dac/epp access?

Can't see many people giving out their server's location if they are getting good speed to Nominet, they'll want to keep others away :)

Only if they are scared... ;-)

If you make a serious enquiry to a dropcatching hoster there's no reason why they wouldn't give you a traceroute to back up their claims, but there's no reason for them to post that information publicly.

agreed; I just remember that it was fairly common knowledge before nominet moved a load of things a few months back. I'm not sure if the servers that count moved or not though.

Pipex have a center in the same Oxford Science buisness park as Nominet. Doesnt mean much as the OC between the offices wouldnt be linked. I wonder if they have WIFI in the Nominet office lol

Does that mean being on the Oxford University network will get you really close to nominet and be good for drop catching (if so I now hope even more that I've got those three As) :)

Next time you walk past Nominet look for the "tramp in a box" outside the Nominet doors, well thats actualy a laptop not a box, and the sandwich, thats a router. You wont find me begging for money or drugs. Just screaming at you for batteries! ARGHHHHHH
