I had a little bit of trouble. I was trying to optimize a UK website with some financial keywords but after three months, all of them ranked well in .co.in instead of .co.uk. Now I am sure whether Google is as smart as that.

Make sure in google sitemaps you choose your target location as "UK"

This should help

Do you have lots of backlinks from sites hosted in India?

Do you have two identical websites...coz this is not good. If you want to rank well for co.uk then redirect permanently the co.in version.

From what I've heard, make sure backlinks from directories etc are from UK sites.

If your backlinks are stronger from India than the UK then Google will estimate that your site is more relevant to that country. If you have used an Indian based SEO service then you need to get those same guys to get you UK backlinks to strengthen your position in the UK google index.

You might also find that the search terms you are optimising have less competition in the .in Google.

No backlinks are from co.uk sites and I have chosen UK as targeted location. Now please suggest.

Then simply ignore the Google .in ranking, your chosen terms simply face less competition in that index. Work on building more .UK backlinks and tighten up your onpage SEO.

what is the connection with india? I wouldnt even think about checking my uk sites ranking in google.co.in ?!

Do your keywords contain UK, UK cities or geographical locations to the UK?

It is also often said that if you visit and search for your domain in Google you will see different results to someone on google.co.in in Inidia.

It could be that if you are using an India based SEO company they have backlinks pointing from India hosted domains that you may not be able to immediately see giving a slightly better ranking for the Google India results.

Probably many factors causing this but agree with the above - concentrate on the UK listings and ignore the India listings for now.

Hi

If you have a google account, in webmaster tools you get to choose what country you want to aim your site at.

Secondly try and get links from site with a .co.uk domain extension.

They also say that where the sites that link to you are hosted can effect which google search engine you rank higher in.

Just keep doing what you are doing and eventually you can rank well in all engines.

Wierd how all the SEO threads are often full of first time posters / low post counts who all have SEO company urls's in sigs / profiles :)
