Integrating Google Maps & Databases, 'Api' etc?

Hi everyone,

Can anyone tell me how this site: http://whoissick.org/sickness/ - runs/works?

Is it just an implementation of the free Google map integration, or is it more complex than that? (e.g. 'Api'?).

I'm wanting to do something similar to 'Who Is Sick' using Google Maps, with an overlay of user entered subject data (ideally using PHP/MySQL) - can anyone point me to a script or integration method that isn't too difficult?

Any other help much welcomed!
