Welcome to our last monthly Industry News Digest for 2024. Explore new online trends and domain industry news which wrapped up the year.
Afternic, a domain marketplace, has released its latest list of trending keywords in domain names, based on the domain sales associated with each keyword. Here’s a top for October 2024:
As we can see, ‘MY’ is once again a leader, replacing ‘AI’, another top keyword throughout the year. ‘IT’, related to tech solutions, was #4 in that rating.
The most popular word – the article ‘the’ – would make a round 20 but it was excluded from the ranking as it carries no meaning by itself.
Why should you care? Understanding the current trends in keywords is crucial if you consider investing in domain names. It helps investors choose domain names that both align with current market demands and also have the potential for significant growth in value over time.
Tracking keyword trends in domain names also enables businesses to make strategic decisions when choosing a domain name to operate under. A wide range of domains with those keywords are available from it.com Domains, such as aitool.it.com.

Darpan Munjal, CEO of the Atom.com domain marketplace with more than 50,000 clients, reported that users are increasingly choosing domain zones other than .com.
Munjal notes that in 2022, 91% of domains on his marketplace were in the .com zone, and in 2024, this figure dropped to 86%. The popularity of alternative choices (other domain extensions) has increased at a faster rate, reaching 13.8% compared to 11.5% in 2023. Munjal also noted the growth in the popularity of the .ai zone (8% in 2023, 20% in 2024), a slight decline in the .io zone (22% in 2023, 20% in 2024), and a steady growth in the .org zone (9% in 2023, 11% in 2024).
Domain investor Elliot Silver said that this year he invested in other domain zones more than ever. Startups are a catalyst for the development of other zones, including new gTLDs (generic top-level domain) and other categories of users will catch up later.
Why should you care? Businesses can create unique and memorable domain names by paying attention to different extensions. This approach helps make the brand more personal and attracts more customers.
One way to use domain extensions is by combining them to create a domain hack. For instance, combining ‘do’ and an .it.com extension to create ‘do.it.com’ could be a creative way to present a company as modern and innovative.

The iStock 2025 Marketing Trends report reveals that 81% of consumers don’t trust social media content. However, they still rely on visual platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels for discovery and inspiration: 82% of users go to TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts for video content.
Data from iStock, an e‑commerce platform providing premium content, indicates that the perception of influencer ‘realness’ has decreased among consumers. 67% of people trust traditional advertising over sponsored influencer posts.
iStock recommends what it calls Real-User Content (RUC) — images and videos that project a sense of reality, with a focus on being real, truthful, and original. They emphasize offering real stories and being relatable instead of content that reflects virtual perfection.
Why should you care? This trend underscores the importance of authenticity in marketing in the era of AI-generated content. Brands that present themselves as relatable and genuine are more likely to foster trust and loyalty among consumers.
By focusing on RUC and embracing imperfections, businesses can create deeper connections with their audience, ultimately driving engagement and sales.

OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has introduced Sora, a neural network that can create realistic videos based on text inputs. Paid users received access to the system on December 9, with the exception of the European Economic Area, UK and Switzerland.
Sora is capable of generating complex scenes with multiple characters, movements, detailed objects, and backgrounds. It understands complex queries and remembers the appearance of characters, taking into account user needs and real-world interactions.
OpenAI claims that Sora is the foundation for developing models that can interact with the physical world.
Just days after the announcement of OpenAI’s Sora, Google released its latest video generation model, Veo 2.0. The new version offers 4K resolution (something that Sora doesn’t have), improved camera control, and overall quality, realism and accuracy. The first version was released in May 2024 but was not made publicly available.
Why should you care? This development could revolutionize the way brands approach video marketing. Instead of using traditional methods, they could start using AI-powered production techniques. As businesses look for new ways to engage their audiences, tools like Sora and Veo can provide cost-effective solutions for creating compelling visual content.

. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI), marketplaces, and the overall quality of information available affected Google’s search traffic.
The Wall Street Journal reported that, according to eMarketer, Google’s share of the US search advertising market will fall below 50% for the first time in 2025.
“Younger generations are turning to other platforms for information gathering, including AI,” The Wall Street Journal notes. OpenAI has added search to ChatGPT, and Meta is planning its own search engine.
Even AI-powered chatbots on different devices are becoming more capable of solving questions, while Microsoft and Apple are integrating these technologies into their operating systems. Amazon is making billions of dollars from advertisers as users choose to browse products directly on the marketplace, bypassing Google search.
Why should you care? This shift is a big change in how people learn about products and decide what to buy.
More and more people are now using different platforms and apps. Therefore, companies need to change their promotion methods to remain popular and successful on the Internet. Companies that get a lot of customers through Google could try using other advertising methods to diversify marketing methods.
