What effect is this going to have on aff marketing ?

When you consider that it disables cookies, if web users start to use this a lot then it will effect sales tracking.

Opinions please

It will of course damage certain aspects/channels however I'd guess most customers will be using IE so at worst case could lose 10-20%?? Not sure on figures

Didn't even think about other browsers, odd given that I use FF myself most of the time :|

I feel better now :p

Both IE8 and FF have a browser privacy mode. I think it's "In private browsing" in Internet Explorer, and "Start Private Browsing" in Firefox. I guess that most other browsers will have this option in the next version if they don't have it today.

I'd say it's extremely difficult to be able to assess the current impact on affiliates as they just appear as normal visitors to the merchant. But I think the saving grace at the moment is that most customers don't use it.

It is a concern though, on a positive note it's making me more active towards domain sales

Thanks for that mate, very good article, nice to know that they still use cookies from before and during the session

Warning !
to anyone using in private browsing, I was looking at an adult site 2 days ago regarding an adult domain I own and thought it would be a good idea to use in private browsing so I did, however when I finished and closed the in private browsing window a pop up full of images of naked women and say sex-sex-sex was still open

So it's not 100% private :|

One thing hardly anyone seems to know about is that cookies are kind of irrelevant now in terms of privacy because the advertising networks are tracking everyone across the net (or on websites with ads, so most of the net) using flash embedded cookies which cannot be disabled in a browser (unless you don't have flash enabled). So without knowing, without consent and without ability to block them, everyone is being tracked anyway. These flash cookies are typically invisible to the user and can be stored all over the place on your harddisk. There is however an addon for firefox to delete them after each session.
