We are proposing to remove the ‘claim to the name’ requirement from the IEDR’s Registration & Naming Policy. The ‘claim to the name’ refers to the requirement on registrants to prove a legitimate claim when applying for a new dot ie domain.

Registrants will still need to prove their real connection to the island of Ireland, and their identity, when applying for a dot ie domain.

Thanks Dog, hadn't seen that, I've filled out the consultation form, I think it's a great idea to open it up a bit here.

I liked question 8 :D:D

Question 8: Removing the claim requirement means that anyone with a proven connection to Ireland will be able to get any name they like that’s available. For example, a business in Dublin operating as a butcher could register www.galwayflowers.ie, if it was available. What is your opinion of this possibility?

A public consultation on the liberalisation of .ie domain registration and naming policy begins today and will run until 30 September.

Currently, to register a .ie domain name, an individual or business must prove that they have a valid claim to the desired name and a real, tangible connection to the island of Ireland.

Our proposal is to retain the requirement for registrants to prove their connection to Ireland, but drop the need to prove a valid claim to the name. If the policy change is approved, any individual or business with a provable connection to Ireland will be able to register a .ie domain name on a first-come, first-served basis.
