How do you transfer a domain name that you sell?

Is it just a case of changing your contact details to the Buyers:???: through your registrar...please can someone explain this process?

Unless there is already a thread??? ;-)

If it's a .uk domain name, you need to contact Nominet and ask for a transfer form. You fill it out and also have to write a letter to Nominet to accompany the form (just a short one confirming you're transferring the name).

The buyer fills out the other half of the form and writes yet another short letter, and you then send all the paperwork to Nominet with payment of £30+VAT.

They then transfer the domain name to the buyer.

More details here:

If it's a non-UK domain name, you can generally do this using your registrar's automated control panel without having to mess about with paperwork and without paying any fees.

£30!!! - so, when you to decide to sell a domain - you really have to take into account what you paid for it - plus Nominet's fee. (obviously!)

Do you know how long this process takes?

Your best bet is, when selling, to say that the buyer has to pay the Nominet fee. If you sell a domain for £500, the fee is not a big issue. But if you make a small beans sale for £50, the fee is a real deal breaker.

How long does it take? Generally a few days each for Nominet to send out the form and then process the transfer.

You could always go round to the buyers house, sign the papers, let him see the MOT, go to a garage, put it on the hoist, look at the exhaust, kick the tyres, do a road test, buy him a burger, then send the paperwork in a forked stick via the Royal Mail, and included a swab of your DNA and it's sold.!!
We need an eBay for domain sales.
