With so many names lying dormant, i'm on a mission to get as many minisites up and running as poss. Currently I have about 100 sites up and running.
I'm using hostgator at $9.99 a month, which i'm sure isnt the best way to go about it.

If anybody can give me a quick rundown on getting my own hosting, I'd much appreciate it.

you're paying $9.99 pm for each site atm?

you probably need some sort of reseller account - for about £50 gbp pm should get unlimited hosting, support for php, asp, stats packages, pop3s all the usual etc.

Ive used both gradwell.com and fasthosts for years and they been fine - there are loads around.

And is that US based servers? ok for co uk domains but not for .coms with uk targets.

Weycrest always get a mention here, and meirhosting offer about 50 domain reseller a/c for £7.99pm and the support is ok.

I've just moved mine from streamline to heart internet. Unlimited hosting/reseller acc for just under £40 pm inc vat. 10 times easier to use and setting up mysql is a doddle (even for me) They have been good so far and support is also fast.

I have several hosting accounts.

Hostgators support is second to none in my experience, always helpful and polite on the rare occasions you need to speak to them.

I would recommend a couple of independant reseller accounts that way each site can have its own cpanel and you can split related sites across hosting and negate any potential cross linking penalties.

A simple reseller seems the way to go. Be cautious over paying too little for this as you need to know that there will be someone to support you if it goes wrong, however try not to be drawn to the "unlimited" accounts as these often have restrictions buried in the small print which prevent you from using much of the resources in the package.

In general you get what you pay for, the big names are often lacking in support, but cheaper, the smaller guys offer better support, but you have to pay a more realistic rate. If you are making money from the sites, then you need to know that you have good support, if the sites are create, publish & forget, then you can probably get away with cheaper hosting.

Take a quick look at the whois details and see how long the hosting company's domain has been registered for and go with your gut feel :)
