Hello everyone,

I somehow picked up domaining as a 'hobby' earlier this year. Spent the first couple of months reading a tonne of posts on acorn and seeing if I could catch any reasonable drops on caught.co.uk. Never actually posted on here at the time, but since then I started a new job and became a daddy, so this got put on the backburner somewhat and things got forgotten.

Anyway, thought I'd introduce myself now and attempt to actually profit on my time spent, the late nights and the attitude from the missus; rather than just have a big direct debit going out yearly. I have a list of .co.uk names I'd appreciate your feedback on, any advice where to post them any when I can get away with it? :)

So... my worst domain... well, at the beginiing I crossed the line too early and saw 'y*h*o games.co.uk' on a droplist. I thought to myself that must be worth a few bob to them, I'll play Robin Hood and rescue it for them from the brink and sell it to them for a nice tidy sum. So I did rescue it, got a website suavy mate to post 'under maintenance - open to offers' on the homepage... then started reading advice on acorn how to go about selling it. What followed was some quick and stressful emails to 123reg attempting to get a refund and my name taken off the who.is... :-(

I've hope I've learnt a few lessons since :)

And... one of my better ones that seems to get at least some traffic -
cheap-dresses.co.uk

Regards,
Fuzzer

Welcome Fuzzer :)

You learned quicker than most, many of us in the early says spent a fortune on those kinda names, and lots of others got the legal bills.

Do lots of research, check out domainprices.co.uk to see what sells, check out domainlore.co.uk for auction prices at reseller rates usually, those will help steer you :)

Welcome, yours is a familiar story to many of us! The good news is you learn't quickly. Best of luck.
Rob

Too true!
In the last few years I've never bought more than a domain a month, as it's now just a side venture, but a few years ago when I started buying them I saw how to be rich and bought all sorts of crap.
Of course at the time I wondered why more seasoned domainers hadn't bought the ones I was getting, but I put it down to they simply hadn't seen them.

I learned soon after that they had in fact seen them, and had laughed and moved on...

For example one of my first buys was citr0en .com, with a zero. Yes I thought, the car manufacturer would buy this to avoid others coining in on their brand with a typo etc.
Of course, learning that they didn't give a crap, as neither did anyone else

Same with f1shing .net, with a 1 instead of i.
I felt really chuffed getting that...

The ones I own now aren't amazing, or for getting rich. But if I make a few hundred on some of them over time from them being sat at Sedo etc then great.

thanks for the warm welcome guys... much appreciated.

Skinner - I've probably read a long book's worth of your previous posts, learned a hellova lot and can honestly say I can't remember disagreeing with a thing, pleased to meet you :)

glad to know it wasn't just me making the mistakes in their early days.

I've literally just picked this up again yesterday after a few months off - so the plan for the near future is to look at a few droplists again, find some gems, load them into a system, cross my fingers and feel the buzz again :)

What I more realistically should do is - go over what domains I actually did acquire back in the day (I can't actually remember all of them, i think they're spread over a few different registrars), and compile a short list (very short) of the best ones.

I, like many I imagine, have learned the ability to buy a few domains, but am yet to learn the selling process. Would love to make a sale soon, anything above the catch fee :)
so I can get to know the best transfer process?

Attepting to sell your existing domains will usually be a very educational experience and I suggest you try doing that next.

Ok then...

I suppose the next step would be to offer up my first 2 months bounty for you all to consider. Please be honest with your opinions/valuations (if any), I had a lot of fun hunting and catching them, and all with development in mind ;) unfortunately my sitebuilding skills got put on the backburner at the same time, and weren't much then anyway.

I'm aware some are hyphenated... I find this game similar to fishing - I tried catching the bigger fish (unhyphenated) too, but I only pulled out the tiddlers... must be my bait.

Here goes:

cheap-dresses .co.uk
thankyougifts .co.uk
wholesale-handbags .co.uk
virtual-games .co.uk
bitstore .co.uk
fishingforum .co.uk and fishing-forum .co.uk

Any private offers welcome - whatever you're thinking take £20 off cos you'll probably have to give me a few pointers on how to ship it over to you :)

and please... no piss taking :-(

p.s. by 'piss-taking' - I mean - out of the domain names, I'm not being condescending regarding offers, I'd be honoured with just some positive feedback :)

cheap-dresses .co.uk - Very difficult to sell

thankyougifts .co.uk - You don't tend to buy a gift to say thank you do you?? Very difficult to sell. Gift domain two a penny.

wholesale-handbags .co.uk - Extremely difficult to sell. A wholesale handbag business does not need this domain to be a success because they aren't consumer facing. Hyphen too, so not a great domain.

virtual-games .co.uk - Might have a bit of brandability without the hyphen, but even then a hard sell.

bitstore .co.uk - This could be a future brand, e.g. bitcoin related. Might make a sale one day. Hold and hope.

fishingforum .co.uk and fishing-forum .co.uk - FishingForum.co.uk is good. This could be developed into a successful site, but would take a lot of hard work. That means true money is from developing, but that allows the possbility of selling the domain too, although potential developer is never going to be that generous when buying the domain.

Good luck.

Many thanks for your comments accelerator. kindly taken on board.

As I'm new, and for the sake of my learning curve, I'd like to respond with why I liked these names. Any feeback is appreciated so I can see if I'm making schoolboy mistakes:

cheap-dresses - 18,100 uk exacts - could suit someone who has a affiliate model for clothes sales.

thankyougifts - some people do - 4400 uk exacts, similiar to cheap dresses but with a gift theme.

wholesale-handbags - wholesale handbag businesses are consumer facing in the sense that local shops, boutiques and market traders need stock. 1900 uk exacts - but orders would be large quantities. suitable for affiliate wholesalers.

virtual-games - get in early and make a name for the site now before virtual games is the next big thing from playstation, xbox and nintendo. Taking off in next 3 years.

bitstore - speculative, but I think a nice name if bitcoins really took off

fishingforum - massive sport, massive potential for discussion - already a few big forums but this name should get you on 1st page with some time and effort. suitable for fishing tackle sales.

Is my thinking right?

p.s. I'm having trouble logging in - I log in but it doesn't recognise I have until I go to a new page. And after some more browsing, it'll tell me i need to log in again. Is it just me?

and almost forgot - Merry Christmas to you all!

(I have a month old baby who doesn't know the difference between day and night yet and she likes to remind me.. quite often. I'm not always up at 3 in the morning)

Welcome to the forum:) It's got to b one of the friendliest (certainty domain name based) forums out there

checked out domain prices.co.uk - doesn't seem to have been updated since last April?

...and I've only just figured out how to use the quote tool - now we're rolling :)
