hi, after having a read on here and a read on the net and after a few head aches i have struggled to find a domain name that relates to the area i am trying to get into i did find one but that was a premium name and after a bit more reading i decided to get some words out of my head and mix and match and came up with this domain below as every domain name i typed in was taken or a very expensive premium domain name.

have i wasted my money? as i like it but is it ideal, sorry this is the first time i have got into domain buying.

the area i am trying to come across in is all about "fish" the pet sort you have at home in aquariums.

so going by what i have read i needed a short domain under 10 letters? and first word i needed was what im about so that will be "fish" and then something positive that relates to fish and also means people like me who are aquarium enthusiasts so i picked the word "shoal" (group of fish/people)

so i come up with www.fishoal.com fish and shoal but mixed in together

so have i wasted a tenner or am i thinking along the right path or not?

i only came to the above idea through reading so much on the net and on here about mixing and sort of having a unique worded domain but have i miss-read and got in wrong all together?

thanks for reading! people

I'd not think shoal in the context of a home tank of fish (unless your tank is significantly bigger than mine!)

hi i think you miss-read my thread, its a domain relating to fish, and shoal meaning "group". as in a group of enthusiasts but keeping the term fish related, you stick a load of fish enthusiasts in one area its like a shoal of people as in fish related, and the domain is fish related, you see? and as far as i know a group of fish of more than 5 to any amount of thousands is classed as a shoal.

If you build a decent site and have a decent community then it does not matter what your domain is. Domainers/Affiliate marketers bleat on about "generic premium domains" and "category killer domains" and all that nonsense. How many of the top 100 sites are premium generic or category killer? Great domains to have, but not an instant formula to a successful site.

P.S. if you payed a tenner GBP for a .com you are being ripped off.

I think it was a tenner as got the .com and .co.uk I didn't mention that. I am happy with the name so I guess its just the work I put into it now, am sure I will do well as apart from my full time job I have managed to create a near on full time job for my partner in this current climate by just word of mouth so with the help of a web page it can't make what were selling by just word of mouth y less of what the current work is so again I look forward to peoples help on a getting a wep page up and going to a already steady business. Thanks for your reply I get your point so I will just have to put the effort into my domain as I did starting what I have created so far and as long as the money continues to come in its all the better and worth a little investment to a domain, cheers

Fishoal? That's not very attractive to Google. Why not FishShoal?

I'd suggest that you have answered your own question then, if it needs a long explanation, you probably need to think again.

I also don't think your name is that strong. A name also needs to be easily understandable, memorable, easy to pronounce, spell etc.

I've PM'd you one suggestion.

Completely agree!

I think in a few months you're going to get tired of always explaining why it's fish-OAL before you can even start telling people about the content of your site...

If you're based in the UK, I'm not sure you really have to have the com / co.uk combo. If it's a catchy domain and both are available - of course, why not? But I think a better uk domain (where the com is already taken) works better than reducing the quality just to be able to get both.

I'm not entirely sure it's a sector where all good options have gone...

Although I'm not saying the following are perfect by any means, a 5 minute search for uk domains came up with the following free to reg;

fishchat.co.uk
fishdiscussions.co.uk
fishdiscussion.co.uk
fishhub.co.uk

ok - now I'm really confused and understand Dale's post...

Why not FishShoal?

fishshoal.co.uk is free to reg after all?

I'm posting these availables for all to see as you've said you're actually happy with your name.

Good luck with your project. It is very true that a generic premium domain doesn't make or break a site - FagEnd is completely right! But I do think it needs to be either catchy, quirky, unique. The only other requirement is for the domain to be easily pronounceable and I'm not sure yours fits the bill - in text promotions it matters less but tell someone your domain in the pub and they're not going to know whether it's fishoil, fishol, fishshoal or, in fact, fishoal. And, whether it's a hobby site or a serious revenue generating project, it's never good if the majority can't spell it without you spelling it to them first.

All the best, Richard!

My total honest opinion > I really don't like it, you'd be better off with something like davesfish.com or whatever your name is ?

Good luck

yeah thanks for the replies i have purchased fishshoal.co.uk as i do only intend to use what im doing in uk not abroad, i will still however try using fishoal.co.uk along with fishshoal.co.uk and see what happens maybe use one or the other to direct to another webpage? cheers anyway

Was going to suggest PlaiceBook - but both the .com and .co.uk have already gone!

well i have come up with a load of other names going on peoples feedback however i read a thread saying not to place your domain name ideas on here, so how or who do i ask to look at my list of domain names and give me a honest opinion of these new domain names?? and help with me selecting the better domain name in means of rememberence and staying unique and meaning what i will be based on, is it someone from admin team who i need to pm and then pm them the list and then go from there? would be great if someone could help us out with advising me on the names i have come up with after reading all the feedback and pm's i had as dont want to waste another tenner on a useless .com and .co.uk domain! cheers

If you aren't an affiliate or a domainer, and your name is easy to remember, easy to spell, and short, then it's not 'useless'.

You can have a poor domain name and it doesn't matter if your site is popular and you either enjoy running it or you make money from advertisers.

The most likely issue is if you yourself get bored of it five years down the line.
