...who gives a toss about what's going on in Syria?

I was a kid during the peak of the cold war with Russia...end result...nothing! But the media tried their hardest (on the wishes of our leaders) to build up the threat and fear amongst the masses. Same is happening now with the Middle East and with Al Q.

Just seen a 10 minute News At Ten report on a Sunday Times journo who's been killed in Syria...at the risk of sounding harsh - so what? As far as I'm concerned they don't need to be there; not there on my behalf. If that was my wife and she wanted to go and do that crap, I'd divorce her...if she put that job above her own safety it's her own stupid fault.

Rant over - as you were.

Its all about how you judge your own existence, whether you worry about the dog chewing your shoe or nuclear proliferation. If you don't want to worry about it then you can be assured that someone without a dog is worrying about it on your behalf.

More fascinated by the UN political infighting & by-play over the Syrian issue. Russia & China's veto usage has really had them pinning their flag to the mast over state controlled violence.

I'm sorry but in this case I totally disagree with the tone of your comments. War journalists know the extreme risk they take, and it is a risk they are prepared to take as they are committed to letting the world know about seriously bad things that are happening in the world. I don't like airing political views in public that much, but this was a brave woman working for the good of humanity, and I have a lot of respect for people that choose to do such things.

If its the same ten minute report I watched there was also the story of a poor kid who lost there life from a piece of shrapnel from a bomb sent in by the tyrannical government.
Not everyones lucky enough to born in such decent countries if the shells were coming down on your wife or kids be wouldn't you want someone to tell the world what was happening to you.
The complete inaction from the international community is whats really disturbing it seems we only care about protecting innocent civilians when theirs massive oil reserves to be plundered.

Ok, Accelerator and newpbc - I get your points. Perhaps my initial post didn't explain myself too well.

There is terrible stuff going on all over the world - who decides that the media should devote so much time to Syria? I'll bet that 95%+ of the UK population couldn't go straight to it on a map. And what do they expect us to do with this information?

Why doesn't the media report on the devestation caused by allied forces in Iraq....over 50 murdered today - its far worse there than it was under Saddam Hussein. Our leaders had a big hand in causing the trouble there today - surely that's bigger news. Why is Syria becoming the media's priority?

newpbc;

We're not the world police - sometimes doing nothing actually leads to less harm.

I never said us specifically I said the international community needs to needs to stand up and sort it out. What the journalists are doing are trying to shame politicians around the world into sorting it out.
I'd be all for are so called allies in the region the Saudis, to use all the jets we have sold them to lead a Libyan style campaign to take out the governments heavy weapons and let the people fight a fair battle.
I agree with you what was done in Iraq in are name was an absolute nightmare Blair,Bush and everyone else involved should face trial for war crimes in my opinion.

unemployment risen by 47,000 and we are giving somalia £50 million to help with food shortage etc

why always us?

spend £50 million by putting more police on the streets, bin men etc

what a waste!

Not a waste mate unemployed or not no one in this country is at any real danger of dying of malnutrition.
People their die their every because theres no food or hope.
I really don't get why people begrudge helping those living in really poverty. Instead of worrying about about 50 million going to feed staving people. Question the government who's paying out £800 million in bonuses to the failing state owned banks. How many police, nurses teachers and doctors could that pay for.
Tell them until every penny of tax payers money is paid back no bugger gets a bonus and if they don't like it show them were the door is. As you say theirs plenty of people out their looking for work.

Don't often air my views but c'mon... They are dying of hunger/ malnutrition because they can't be bothered to sort themselves out. Anyone who has done some travelling to a lot of the places that the UN sends aid to in Africa will have seen the locals' attitude- 'no need to go and sort out food, shelter etc. because someone will come and drop some more when we run out'. I'm sure people wouldn't begrudge anyone if they (the aided) showed a little self motivation to help themselves out.
