Some of these new Governance Review suggestions are concerning me...

Things like:

1. Nominet says: "We propose to simplify the terminology by referring to members simply as "members" rather than "the Steering Committee".
http://www.nic.uk/governance/consultation/terminology_transfer/

Yet again the power and influence of the membership is being eroded away?

2. Nominet says: "To clarify that proxies should be present to represent an absent member’s votes, but should not speak at a meeting without the permission of the Chairman". http://www.nic.uk/governance/consultation/proxies/

How many "proxies" normally attend the AGM each year? I can only think of 1 person in the past few years. If Nominet is open and transparent then why does it matter if a proxy speaks?

3. Nominet says: "We propose that the Board is given the power to expel a member if they are found to breach the membership rules, either for a single serious breach or for repeated less serious breaches". http://www.nic.uk/governance/consultation/membershiprules/

Even though I agree members should be expelled for "criminal activity, threatened or actual physical or verbal abuse of Nominet's staff"..... I don't agree the board should have the power to expell members itself. How many times has the existing rule been used? Was there a vote to expell "Domain Registrar Services" in 2003? This is open to abuse and can be used as a 'big stick' to expell a member who legally challenges or disagrees with them (less serious breaches).

The Rule #1

Do not insult any other member. Be polite and do business. Thank you!
