Google Wave

That is Cool

It looks like a real evolution in communication

cant wait to use it.

What's so good about it?

What is a wave?

A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.

A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.

Nothing much new there, they seem to be making a big thing about it being live chat etc, you can already chat live on Yahoo messenger, MSN messenger etc, so why the big deal

Did you watch the video and understand what they've engineered? If no, watch it and then comment!

You never saw the video or really looked into it so not really a great stand to comment.

Not one to drag thread convo's out like this but........ it's open sourced and will let programmers create custom apps for it as demo'd in the video.

I skipped through bits of the video and to be honest it just looked to be expanding the collaborative features of google docs. Two people can already edit a document or spreadsheet and chat at the same time with google talk in google docs?

I must admit I didn't watch it all because I turned it off as i thought they were talking about a rival to messenger as well.

I'm not going to say it wasn't, but the first 15 minutes didn't show me anything fundamentally new.

I sat in a room with my friend and watched 15 minutes of the video, afterwards i said to him with my jaw still open wide "some people will get it" "and some people wont"
( no offence)

It appears to be in some parts just a subtle blend of all the technology's we know already
but this is bringing them all together so you can communicate from one platform and have that 'Wave' published anywhere else you request.
Or have anyone you want join in on it,

the video shows a example of two people communicating after going on a trip and they both drag there photos in the wave and create a group photo album then add people to the wave so they can view it,
when they were typing, one of them made a spelling mistake. it was instantly corrected.their spell checker not only analyses against a dictionary but it understands the context the words are put in,
they typed 'icland is a icland' and it automatically changed it to 'iceland is a island',
this is a amazing leap all in its self.

they also have a app that translates as you type so if you wanted to type to your Spanish friend you could type in English and they can instantly read it in Spanish.

unlike IM you can zero back in on part of the conversation highlight a word and respond, which makes a box come up below it
unlike Email when you are communicating with more than one person and one joins in late they can easily rewind to see what has been said

you can add multiples of users allowing them all to see what's being typed or do the equivalent of private messaging them while still involved with the other participants
when you add someone else to the wave they can rewind to see what got said and when, then add responses to the bits they choose which will all update instantly and make the intended participant aware of changes earlier in the thread

they mention that this is all going on live through there servers, this means it has the option to see every character being typed so you can be replying to someone before they have even finished or choose to disable this function

they have a search app included so you can drag a link or a image straight off a mini google window into the text box.
also one app that has already been created allows you to highlight a place name in your text and it will put a map icon next to it,
the other readers can instantly go to maps to see it,
when they do all users can see the same location and if the map moves or zooms in they see that to.
then when all the advertising apears on the map( as its bound to) they can all choose which hotel they want to go to

By the time the developers get hold of this( which is why they launched it so early )
I expect there will be TONs of APPs for it linking it to all the social sites, some forums, blogs,
just about anywhere text gets updated,
you should theoretically be able to have the updates imported into a wave and respond without having to go into the site its self.
I expect it will integrate with SMS ( or what ever the phone standard will be ) so that phone users will be paired even more easily with computer users.

it showed two users filling out a form together that means you could effectually open up a excel work file and start working on it as a team
one could be in charge of imputing data in one column, one could be in charge of another

its about making things more fluid
(ask a mac user why he prefers mac to pc )

imagine being able to post a email to someone at the same time parts or all of it instantly appear in
your twitter update
your blog
your facebook account ( bound to happen )
any website you choose

I Cant Wait for the Acorn Application.
the 'new posts' could arrive directly into a wave and you could add to them while showing infinite other people what you are typing,
If you liked a seller every time they posted you would instantly be notified.
i imagine you would even be able to request keywords to be alerted about just in case that domain that you know they have is being posted for sale.

what im typing now could be instantly published on a blog or sent to a syndicated article network to be distrbuted like rss is today,
possibly only going to the places that had requested content with the keywords contained in the text

How many times when you are communicating to one or multiple people by IM or Email have you felt restricted by what you can do, maybe you have to open up another program just to send something or you want to publish what you are typing somewhere else but have not got the time to do it,
this will speed it all up
it will make you able to do more with your communication time

Google have just provided a new platform
and are wisely inviting people to help integrate it with anything that can speed up your communication

Its a Evolution because it is will help to speed up the time a thought becomes a action.
