Client of ours is looking to register a few .fr domains, can anyone recommend a good (english speaking) registrar for them?

Thanks in advance :)

Craig

Never used them myself, but one option is http://www.eurodns.com/
Also, 1&1 do them, but only via the french site - which is in french!

A French address is required.

Hi Craig,

For .fr domains, there is a dearth of good registrars that have their sites in English too. The best thing to do is go to register.eu - that is actually an offshoot of register.be, but they offer a service as a provider in English and you can also use them if you don't have a French address.

Let me know if you need any more info about this.

French domains

We bought a couple of French domains about a year ago.

We found there were very few registrars willing to deal with French domains because of the fairly tight restrictions on ownership that were in place then. When we bought you had to have a French address to be able to register a .fr. I don't know if that has changed.

We eventually found www.united-domains.de who managed to sort things out for us though. They are part of Lycos, some of the staff speak reasonably good english, they were very helpful (if a bit disorganised) and we finally managed to get the names we wanted.

The French domain transfer system was undergoing a transition from paper records to electronic records when we were buying. Our transfers took months to complete, but I understand the situation has improved since the system upgrade was completed.

My best advice for you is to be very very patient if you are buying a .fr name. Keep a copy of every bit of paperwork you send to anyone about the transfer and accept that you will probably have to resend it several times.

All of these hassles do have one positive side effect though - you can get some top quality domains at very reasonable prices.

Good luck
