Expiring .com

Hi,

Been keeping eyes on a .com for about 5 years now. Extremely brandable - not generic though. Hoping it will not get re-registered again!

Any tips on what to do to order it?

If I really want it I book it with several services to increase chance of catching it.

All most certain to get renewed if it's part of a portfolio - check out the registrant on a google search, that should tell you if your waiting in vain

It's due for renewal in mid-May - do I need to order a drop a certain amount of time before?

Don't want to fork out $100+ for it to be renewed a day after I pay...

A .com Not due to be renewed until mid-may. (registered for the previous 5 years).

1. it wouldn't actually delete until + 42 days, after expiry
2. most if not all auto renewls for GTLDs are actioned on the day of expiry (not before)
3. If it's with godaddy or any other major reseller. It will remain as a brought-in domain on their reselling books.

Godaddy and others now have a habit of adding a years renewal (at their expense) even when the original registrant hasn't paid for renewal (plays havoc for those that use the WHOIS for domain checking, including the current owner).

You mention that the domain is "Extremely Branable" I'm going to guess you got about a 1 in a 100 chance of seeing this domain drop. Make that 1 in a 1,000.

ps lets hope that inhouse (registrar) paying habit never comes to the UK namespace - plays havoc for those with a bad memory

It is brandable, however it's in a niche market and it's a creative name. I do agree my odds are long but fingers crossed!

P.s. I do recall it been reg'd last time very last minute - I got all excited! Looks like this will happen again with the .com system!

Also whats the history - to help your judgement, not for posting here.

If it's not been used previously,or just parked is usually a good sign it's a holders investment. It also common to let domains lapse (without entering a penalty period) to bring it to eyeballs - Seems to be a common tatic these days for those that don't rely on parking income or previous development.

There's one or two that do that here - And very common on the GTLDs

Assuming most work alike - Seeing a domain on auction does not mean the current registrant (cannot or will not renew it)

The domain was in use about 4 years ago - but has been going to a dead page ever since!

The systems aren't really complex, You just have to remember that each registration service has it's own rules,( Thats why it's best to stick with just one service and become familiar with their time-lines.

And in your case it's where the domain your interested in is currently registered and how they handle deletions.

If you've got anything particularly good in .com, always best to take the max period of ten years then keep topping it up to the ten every couple of years
