Hi everyone.

I just wondered whether you thought that with the implementation later this year (projected) of the EPP service from Nominet it will essentially kill the drop catching marketplace ?

My reason for asking is simple, I have commenced programming on a DAC / Automaton system and I see advantages to that (for me) compared to a DAC / EPP system and wondered if others shared that point of view ?

Thanks

Jason

If EPP proves quicker wont all dropcatchers just switch to EPP

Dont quite understand as it makes no odds

Sure will require slight changes to folks current code but essentially its the same.

Maybe im missing the point of your question ;)

Surely you'd use the fastest system (which I presume will be EPP as you won't have to worry about smtp)

I may be talking about a point that I believed was well known & understood but seems may not be.

My apologies.

Well I dont think anyone would be foolish enough to run just DAC/EPP as whats the chance Nominet could keep a service up 24/7 ;)

Besides it takes one line of code to knock out an email.. so wont everyone just do DAC/EPP/Automaton at the same time?

LOL very true but I guess I meant further down the line, when (as I am sure will happen) the EPP will be hailed a success by Nominet and a call for a vote to retire the Automaton will inevitably happen.

Regardless of how well epp goes down I doubt automaton will ever be retired.

from a newbie to a pro, thankyou for your POV, it has helped a lot.

Nominet have stated it in the past (somewhere) that the EPP is not a replacement for the Automaton, and was never meant as such. Just as a move towards a data structure more in line with other major registries and an advanced real time synchronisation with the registry data.

OK, allow me to play devil's advocate for a moment.

If the Automaton doesn't die, but essentially becomes non used by all the major registrars (the big 3 as shown on that powerpoint by giraffe a coupld of weeks ago) along with the other 1/3rd of non domaining registrars and it is only used by domainers then isn't the Automation dead in all but name ?

That's assuming that the 'major registrars' get their arses into gear and put the effort into developing an interface. A number of them rely on third party products e.g modernbill that have their own schedules...

I don't think its a coincidence that many domain professionals (I hate the term domainer), who are by Nominet definitions registrars, will be the first to use the EPP, they were with the dac and many, myself included, were part of the dac beta testing team, and will be for the EPP.

The automaton won't be dead for a long time, and will probably be the back-end to the proposed regisrar web interface.

Damn fine points there.

So in your opinion (and mine as it so happens) it is likely that about 2/3rds of current registrars will continue to use the "traditional" registration route.

Very interesting indeed.
