Hey y'all,

Wanted to start a fresh discussion going on selling to end users...and I suppose wanted to know when the trend here was. Do most people just sell within the trade, or just to end users and / or a bit of both?

I understand that there's an argument to be had for waiting and being approached, but in someway I find flaws in that because 1) that's true only if you hold excellent / valuable domains to begin with. Either bought early or later for more. 2) do joe public even know about whois let alone making the effort to reach out to the domain owner ? I'm not always convinced they do...

Sometimes it's easier to just buy a variation in the name......

From experience, I owned A LOT of wine domains at one point (I think over 100) - and ended up selling them to a wine investment company for 100quid / piece (they only took 45) but even still...

Inspired by posts on here mainly, I did go ahead and email some people and because I actually think I'm not a bad on the phone, in many instances I would call and actually pitch the domain name....

The 2 objections I tend to get was:

1) errrr...we already have a domain name, thank you very much. - even if the one I'm offering is better....
2) my web person does all that stuff. I just don't get involved...

Now both of course are valid responses......

So I guess as I said above - just wanted to get a discussion going about those who do end user sales, techniques and moreover patterns you may have noticed in the process.....

What else........ermm....I think that was it....

oh yeah..

Happy Friday ;)

I find the best way to cope is to not invest too much emotion- it can be so demotivating when they brand you as a cold caller, ask you to 'put it in an email' but never reply, or outright tell you they're not interested. I'd appreciate any tips from you guys about how to nail a killer phone call!

My advise would be....
When your chasing the big fish it's a matter of patience and more patience.
Big companies vary rarely make a decision in a couple of days or weeks for that matter.
If you keep calling or emailing you can sound desperate and often devalue the price your asking.
Do your homework and find the person who can make the decision within the company then pitch to them or them close to them. Then give them time to feed that information to others within the company/business.

Most of all keep going and keep trying.

Some good advise from the posts above.

Good luck

Great discussion.

I think selling to end-users might be my single biggest hurdle.

You are right. Typical answers would be:

1. We already have a domain. (OK, yeah, but your domain is mybuldogs-123.xyz and I am offering BulldogBreeders.co.uk. come on!)
2. OK, How much, my budget is £7. (yeah....ok)

Most end-users do not understand domain name value, both price-wise and "brand" wise (possible potential).

A while ago I acquired BulldogBreeders.co.uk (+ .uk), hence my example ^^. I contact around 100 Bulldog breeders in UK via email (proper domain and signature).

I received TWO responses. One was "no thanks", the other was , "Yeah, I saw the name earlier going for £7.99". I knew this would turn out bad :)

I ended up selling the pair for £50 to the second end-user. A domain which I thought would be really great as a brand and authority in the niche.

I have not given up, I just find it extremely challenging.

What I have learnt.

1. The whois email addresses is useless 95% of the time.
2. Take your time in going through Google / Domainero / other methods to find correct email addresses / contact numbers
3. Be VERY VERY patient.

Oh, and I hate (despise) making phone calls, so that is not yet an option for me.

The Rule #1

Do not insult any other member. Be polite and do business. Thank you!
