I logged in to my hosting account tonight, and was going through emails which have been captured for my parked domains.

There were two emails from ebay, one saying id sold an item and another was a question from another ebay member. At first I thought it was one of those scam messages but on further investigation it turns out it was from ebay! but this was nothing to do with me what so ever.

The domain is *product*parts.co.uk, the ebay userid was used*product*parts.co.uk. I did a whois and the person whos name was on the ebay email's was also on the whois for used*product*parts.co.uk, so it looks like they have just registered the wrong email.

I contacted ebay using their live chat, and told them about it and was astonished at their replies.

ebay:
Taking that all into consideration, could you be more specific as to what it is that you would like us to do please?

ebay:
Are you getting this emails in your personal inbox or eBay inbox?

Me:
A personal inbox

ebay:
I see.

Me:
so what can be done about it

Ebay:

Lee, as this in your personal inbox, we can make this suggestion: a) set your email filters to filter out this emails, and b) inform your ISP provider about this.

Me:
Jimmy, if i was dodgy! id be able to access their ebay account fairly easily! i am astonished that you only suggest i filter these emails out

Ebay:
I am sorry, but then our role is strictly within eBay and can not exceed that, as is this within the eBay User Agreement.

Ebay:
I doo. But then, this is the lookout of that user.

Me:
i will try and contact the ebay user my self, and ask them to amend their email address

Ebay:
You may send a warning of this, but we can not do so in your behalf or any other user's behalf.

Ebay:
I am sorry, our hands are tied in this regard.

WTF was he saying "I doo. But then, this is the lookout of that user." to me saying I could quite easily access that users ebay account?

Could it be that the person in question was the previous owner of the domain you now own? ie they set up their email and Ebay account while they still had that domain.

I've had a few cases where I've bought domains and put catch all email forwarders on and received emails clearly meant for previous owners.

Ebay's response does seem rather unhelpful. I suppose they're bound by data protection laws though.

Ebay are one of those unhelpful lying companies that i despise.

I recently lost my debit card so ordered a new one, in between they tried to take a payment, but it didn't go through, obviously, they told me my bank had charged a fee so they were passing it on, i called my bank they said it was nonsense,Ebay wont have it and continue to try and make me pay it, I can't actually speak to anyone that gives a shit or can do anything, they all just keep lying and telling me different things, anyway in short Ebay do not give a shit about anything other than profits,so your story does not surprise me in the least.

Luckily, this time it happened to someone honest like yourself, but like you say, imagine if this happended to someone less than honest

Nope their ebay account was set up in JAN this year, the domain is much older than that. Ive contacted the ebay seller to make them aware of it.

Hmm.....that's very odd then. I would have thought that, as with most companies, any time you try and set up a new online count you would get some sort of verification message to your email that you would have to click through on before the account is active. If Ebay's procedures (or lack of them) have made this possible then that's very remiss of them and they should def be taking it more seriously
