Ok - as we know many registrars offer 'back order' drop catching services for a small fee (£29.99 for example)

Now - It might just be me being cynical but why would a company potentially catch a domain that could be worth £xxx, xxx and hand it over for £29.99?

Obviously i know the chances of a high value domain actually dropping is very very slim indeed

But for arguments sake lets say i back ordered business.com (very crude example i know) - and by some miracle it did drop and by some miracle my back order actually caught it

Are you SERIOUSLY telling me the registrar would hold their hands up and say there you go - can we have our £29.99 now?

Cos i find that VERY hard to believe.....

Or am i just a very cynical person?

has anyone managed to catch a blinding domain?

Would love to hear your thoughts / experiences

If they are looking to catch the domain themselves, then I guess they will have it booked themselves and you won't be able to book it with them. I'm guessing that legally they should not accept a catch booking on a domain they want themselves.

The paid catching model is otherwise a volume model which works for some.

Yes, people catch decent names all the time (less and less now as the drops dry up, but...)

For some catchers, the certainty of being paid for say 40-50 names a month, every month (depending on their drop catching skills) is worth more to them than the lottery ticket of having a tiny fraction of a chance of catching a super-prime name (it's almost impossible to do both, unless you structure your service offering VERY carefully and narrowly).

Hmmmmm good points - thanks guys

Guess i'm just one of those suspicious types

back ordered a few domains i have had my eye on for a while - will see how I get on

Cheers

If you have a look in the dropcatching section of this forum you will see we have had a lot of discussion about your point exactly.

It is reasonable to assume that the lure of the big pay day would somehow lessen their integrity but to be honest as has been pointed out the long term regular catch model is very lucrative. Secondly as accelerator has stated all they simply need to do is not accept the backorder.

Good question though!

There is a significant investment in time and money getting into the domain drop industry gone are the days that anyone could write a script and start competing.

I remember when I started I was manually bulk checking dropping domains by hand on godaddy.. lol, good times.

It would be futile for a backorder company to piss off its customers in the way you suggest, while there are some out there who clearly operate a business model that is entirely a conflict of interest and use your deposited funds to fund their own acquisitions, thankfully there are just a few I can think of.

Most of the others are customer orientated and follow through as you would hope and expect.

(case and point would be POOL.com and SnapNames.com, they paid the price for dishonesty and are a shadow of what they once were)
