I am developing an accommodation directory type site which will initially be UK accommodation only.

I have purchased 2 potential domain names, one has the extension .info and the other .net. They are not the same names but they are similar though the .info is a definitely a more generic search phrase.

I would like advice on which is best to use. I am unable to buy the dot com for either and all other extensions are unavailable for a reasonable price. I was offered the dot net for the name I own the dot info of for a whopping $50,000.

The dot info domain is a better name in terms of it being a generic search term. I just am not sure how good a dot info domain is. I don't recall any dot info sites whereas I can think of several well known dot net sites.

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Ok, so traditionally .net is the stronger extension.

If you were going to advertise the site, say on TV, you might consider the .net because currently people are familiar with it and it's easy to say/remember.

However, personally I feel .info will gather momentum, and I like it as an extension (does what it says on the tin). People will get more familiar with .info as more sites are launched.

Re SEO the extension used should make no difference for SEO. However, the keyphrase in the domain will make a little difference. So, if SEO is important to your site, I would go with the best keyphrase domain and use the .info.

I used to think .net but now .info all day long.

I think .info will be stronger than .net and .org in the end game an will only be second to .com

I would take .info over .org & .biz.

both good

I don't like info as they have been used to a huge extent by spammers so harmed by that to a degree, in saying that go with the one that has the best keyword for your market.

Thanks for all the advice. I am going to give the .info a go based on the advice so far.

Cheers

This is totally untrue in my opinion. Can you show me any examples of a .info ranking high / higher than a .co.uk / .com extension on google ?

I am just going on my general knowledge, I can't cite any examples I'm afraid. What I believe is the case is that the search algorithms don't factor the domain extension when calculating ranking. .info doesn't regularly outrank .co.uk / .com because it is a relatively new extension and established players bought .co.uk / .com years ago, but it should be possible to get the .info ranking higher IMO.

The only current drawback to .info might be users are loathe to click on it because of unfamiliarity but that should improve with time.

Not a bad way of looking at it I suppose, and I can see what you mean as .info are fairly new.

I have an extensive knowledge of SEO, and search engines (mainly google) DEFINATLY favour .co.uk / .org.uk extensions over other extensions, due to their appeal to the UK public, which the domains were obviously created for.

If .info extensions were easier to rank, I would be looking to buy premium .infos (obvioulsy 100 times cheaper than .coms) and use my knowledge to rank high on search engines.

Oh I can dream lol ;)

I would agree that .co.uk is advantageous if you are trying to rank highly for UK searches on Google.co.uk, but that is a different scenario from the OP's question, which was the difference between .net and .info.

I would always agree that going with the local geographic extension has benefits if you want to target a specific country.
