Fantastic Article. Talking of buying on acorn and flipping. I am just adding my own little piece of flipping success to the sold board.

Not in Franks League mind, but good still!

Yes I was sent that post through Messenger and was impressed but newbies be warned it isn't that easy with "any domain"

That's a very good return from some extremely shrewd buys. But it's not in any way "representative" of the market, at least from my experience.

I think frank should post up how much tat he has bought as well :)

Good point. Even if they're not "tat" as such, any domains that remain unsold in inventory are effectively costs that weigh down those 2 sales (and don't I know it - our business picture would be that much more rosy if we weren't carrying 6,500 names!)

Yes totally true and not denying the costs of holding a portfolio etc. Mine is in the 1k region so roughly £3k renewal costs per year of domain names.

I take each name on it's own merit though. I don't take the overall portfolio renewal costs into consideration when I make a sale and don't think that is an accurate marker for working out profit on any individual domain. It could be said that the sale of sledges.org.uk for £25 covered my entire portfolio renewals for the proceeding 8 years, but we don't work business like that do we ?

When I sell a name I always replace it with a few equal quality names or I scale it up to the next level by buying higher quality names, which will attract better levels of interest and which can be sold at higher prices, but naturally still have the same annual renewal costs attached regardless of their sales value or worth. This has an overall effect on the portfolio of selling less names for better money for the same renewal costs.

Sorry if any typos, just done this from iPhone.

Whatever a domain is worth / sold for, it still carries the same annual renewal cost,

So is this a +1 for 'make offers' versus 'name your price'?

Domaining is so confusing sometimes? ;-)

Which nutter sold these two domains for £50 each??? I don't even rememeber seeing the sale thread!

Grant

I must admit my arse tightened a bit when I clicked the link and saw the article was from Frank. After scrolling down and seeing the domains I could then bring myself to read it :D

Congrats Frank, nice purchase and a nice return.

A great read. It certainly shows what's possible it you're either selective enough in your purchases, or buy decent names in the right niche. Well done on your attitude during the bidding process too. It seemed to work in your favour.

Well done Frank. Definately worth thinking twice before you delete domains these days.

Both the names were available to register (not dropped):

After 6 years of not a sniff - they were deleted in July 2010 and picked up by member of this forum who sold them on for £50 each. You know the rest ...

Cheers
