For example skynews.com registered by sky.

The actual site is located at news.sky.com

Ive seen this a few times where companies extra registered domains just dont go anywhere, blank page. What is the reason for this? Is it down to slopyness or to get people to go back and find the correct site to use.

Im guessing they may not want people to use the incorrect domains to get to the pages so leave them to not resolve....

With many large corporations brands etc they want you to see what they want you to look at they seem to like to channel you in so they can control your browsing etc. you want a pair of red trainers they want you to go to a page that shows you there latest trainer first or the one that makes them the most $$$ Disney make you walk through the park there defined routes to maximise the selling space before you get to the rides the webs no different really to a large corps.....

They also register a lot of variations also to stop squatters and alike

This still doesn't really answer the question, why don't they just use their alternative domains to drop you where they want to drop you into their main site?

A) They don't want to have too maintain monitor etc all these smaller sites setting up dropping you in takes time and resources

There thinking is if theses smaller sites go down they may loose xxx customers and not know (yes you could monitor the sites but that takes up resources and time again)

which is also why they balls up so much…. but its only when they are offering a good deal etc which may be a loss leader so they may not really want you in there any way

There traffic is not so much driven to them by search engines but the brand itself send out your disc or whatever free rubbish your driving customers to your brand its easier to put one link going to the main site as apposed to lots of links going to different parts or even the same part also you have ten million people coming in from other sites they all take up bandwidth on the other sites just to redirect you that’s money or if you have nothing on it its not going to cache so why bother just leave it going nowhere costing only the domain fee and they have to find and go in the main site

B) There to lazy

The worst case of this I've seen is craiglist.org, which is owned by craigslist.org but points nowhere. craiglist.org has an Ovt of 53,000 with ext – that's a ton of free traffic they're missing out on .
