Hi,

could anyone shed any light on this?

If you go to the domainmonster.com web site and search for a domain, you see some premium domains for sale on the right hand side.

One I just looked at had a price and option to add to basket, then domainmonster let you pay at checkout for it.

Sounds ok so far, but on sedo, the same domain was hundreds cheaper, and not even at a fixed price, just an offer price.

So I checked one we have and it has an offer price only of £250, same domain on domainmonster is up for nearly £700, now if it was to get a sale on DM we would be over the moon, so think the fact they list them is great.

Finally my question, What would happen if someone paid DM for a domain, then tried to buy it at offer price, but seller wanted say £2k?

DM are offering a product then taking money, but dont really have it so to speak? Or am I missing something as usual?

So I checked one we have and it has an offer price only of £250, same domain on domainmonster is up for nearly £700, now if it was to get a sale on DM we would be over the moon, so think the fact they list them is great.

I'm guessing that if you have it listed for £250 on Sedo, and DomainMonster sold it for £700, they would then take it via their partner Sedo for £250 and that's all you would get, rather than the £700?

Just to add, if that is the case, as they'll be a Sedo MLS partner, you would pay 20% commission on the £250 as an MLS sale, rather than the usual 15% on Sedo if it's set as "make offer", of 10% if it's a "buy it now" price.

I would be very happy for them to make as much as they could, but as the domain I saw and the one I tested was only up for offers, what would they do, give the person the money back?

I did not realise you could sell goods you dont actually own or have the absolute ability to buy.

Maybe thats why some buyers go missing when counter offers are higher than the price they have taken?

As far as I understand it's an automated system, so if they bought the domain from DM (literally paid for it and completed the process), it would go into their account immediately. They wouldn't be able to offer a price at Sedo (or, rather, complete a transaction) because the owner would no longer have it. I might be wrong though.

The domain I tested was not for sale at a fixed price. It had a make offers price on it.

At DM it's a fixed price? You either buy it or you don't.

It doesn't make any sense, say I have a domain on Sedo as make offer with no price listed, if a registrar has that name listed on their site for £xxx, how can they complete a sale if they don't know what price I want for the domain, they might offer if for £xxx whereas I might want £x,xxx for it?

Blossom, what I am saying is, they are selling something at a fixed price, that they do not control or have a guarantee of even getting it.

Must be a glitch in there system if its on the sedo MLS it shouldn't also be available for listing at make an offer.
I put up a name in the MLS system a while back then accidentally set it back to make an offer when doing a bulk update and my name disappeared from the premium listings almost instantly.
In theory when someone clicks buy it now on one of these names it is automaticaly pushed to the new owner via sedo and your registrar.
When I listed my name I had to make a special confirmation that I agreed for this to happen from with my registrar

Think it has something to do with uk domains only. Says they are not a recognised extension for premium mls but some companies may show your domains.

Must just be sedo providing DM with co.uk domain lists by accident as they wouldnt get a transfer from the registrar anyway, it would have to be done via nominet properly.

I don't know about Domain Monster's system but Sedo's royally sucks... they frequently advertise for sale domains that they dont own.

Usually this is because they've dropped but remain in the owners accounts although a scenario like you've described above would probably have the same effect.

At the moment for example they have:-

cornishweddings.co.uk advertised for 200 euro
foliostore.co.uk advertised for £120 bin

If you do a WhoIs on either of these they're free to reg.

I've often bought dropped domains and attempted to list them only to find they're already listed via someone else - doesnt give me much confidence to ever buy off there!

so i was hoping ot hear form one of the companies involved becuase it seems like:

1. if the name was truly listed as amke offer at sedo, than its probelatic to have a buy it now

2. if the price is different and i as the seller am paying a commission on sedo, the markting partner should double dip and add-on to the price.

3. ive been with sedo for 10 years, and i know they dont always know whats going with registrar partners, whoese databse is updating when etc.
