No side issue with those that book domain catching services weeks or even months ahead - but, I still wonder how many don't do some basic background checking on the nature of the current domain holder.

Must free-up a lot of prebooked spaces as we all (strickly domainers) do our last minute renewals. ie 80 plus days

I didn't bother booking a hyphenate name I wanted from a large portfolio older and it did drop :-( Had also offered them £50 for it 1 month previously!

Intend to keep my portfolio regged up as far as possible in the hope of prompting enquiries/sales! Personally think lots of entrepreneurs unaware of a "domain industry" will wait to see if a domain will expire if there is 12 months or less remaining rather than making an enquiry.

I take your point Mat.

I don't set-out to leave renewals to the last minute, and try to keep my best domains well up to date. But, what tends to happen is that week before the drop tends to focus the mind with a more indepth look at the terms usage.

Mind you thas has caught me out once or twice, when I thought I had renewed at the last moment only to find I hadn't. I posted really in response to some of the drop catch requests for a month or two ahead of it's drop date but I suppose If catchers don't charge in advance there nothing lost

Sounds like risky business to me! Have all the .com .co.uk you have dropped been reregistered?

Was surprised their counter offer was so high and the domain still dropped!

Yes more or less - around 70% seem to get captured/re-registered on the day they drop. With one particular catcher featuring very, very prominent on .co.uk drops. I worry more if they all stayed unregistered. ;)

regarding your attempt to buy - I've done that myself on a few occasions. rejected an approach or offer only to let the domain drop. I put it down to distractions and I must admit to not taking offers around £50 or so too seriously. I really should because they all add-up
