Wouldn't mind having a look through some before preparing one for end users on the benefits of a domain.

Has anyone produced one? :)

Cheers

Nope, but it is one for those who are pro-active sellers that will make its money back 10 times over.

£250-£300 outlay and if you can re-use 90% of it no matter what the name is.

No brainer imo if you trying to flog your names over £500, anything under then might not be worth it but I personally would.

I was thinking of this a while ago, kind of done like estate agent details, with graphs of search traffic, related products, money made by companies in that sector etc.

But the details that would make them useful would change pretty often, so it could be a fulltime job keepoing them up to date.

Once you have them, you could pair them with a BIN price and a 0800 phone number to buy it there and then, and then distribute the details anywhere you thkink they might sell.

there'd be a hell of a lot of work in getting the info and tailoring for each domain
i've been down this route once, for 2 domains
3 rounds of meetings, presentations, you name it
still 'under consideration'
printouts, pdfs etc

loads of work
tbh sometimes it can be like pandoras box, you start providing info, they want more and more. in the end you are giving them a free education on marketing, domains, past sales, seo you name it. and they might end up paying nothing

better having a guide with basics of stuff, seo, marketing etc, and categorise best domains into categories
then can just send out guide of say best 100 names in brochure fornat
was thinking about doing this for a tradeshow
targetting one of main niches i cater for

This might be a complete new business idea.. Creating sales packages for premium domains and perhaps standard packages which can be used for every domain.

That's presumably what a (good) domain broker should be doing as part of the work they do to justify their fee: create custom sales material.

Tried this 6 weeks ago for the first time, since I couldn't find anybody who'd tried it themselves.

Happy to share my experiences - may knock up a blog post at some point - so ask away if you have specific questions.

It was a lot of work to prepare. I wrote the copy & farmed everything else out. Spent over a day writing & reworking the copy, then outsourced:

- Research
- Mail merge
- Printing
- Envelope stuffing

Total cost was c. £500 to target 150 or so companies.

While the domain hasn't sold, the feedback I've had suggests that the technique has legs.

In the weeks since, I had cash offers/serious interest from around 16 companies. Offers were well under guide price. Not all of this is thanks to the sales pack, but at least 50% definitely were.

I heard from contacts at 2x of the target companies that there was an internal discussion about buying the domain.

A third person contacted me just to tell me how impressive he thought the sales pack was, and that were his circumstances different he'd have likely bought the domain off the back of it.

The format was basically:

- Covering letter (1 page) with background, guide price, how to bid
- Sales pack w/ detail on comparable domain sales, benefits of keyword domains, specific benefits of this domain

As I said - if you've specific questions, just ask.

Sounds good. My only issue with this is, are companies going to think they are getting scammed? How many fake 'domain renewal' and 'european business guide' type letters do you get in the post and bin? Some look really impressive and authentic - but I have a feeling a lot must get binned immediately/handed to the IT guys (who then dismiss it) rather than it going to the correct people..

Just a thought!

That's my main issue, a lot of companies might think your a scammer no matter how you approach them.

Have now done this in my own way for one my lower quality domains to see how it goes. Will update on any progress if successful and may end up offering it as part of a brokering service :)

Re: scams, I don't think it's any different from any other business in terms of you have to earn trust. So I included...

- Registered company address in UK
- Direct line number
- Verifiable references to my business (ie, make yourself Google-able)

On the downside, my company name (same as my handle) may have been a hinderence. Or not - nobody would be dumb enough to scam anybody called that!

In terms of getting binned, the bulk of the research time was tracking down decision makers to stop that happening.

Seems to have worked, since a fair number responded in one way or another.

We just paid for companies house/192.com info to find out who the MD was. Address by name & it gets through vs address to 'Head of IT' and it'll get binned.

Incidentally, we went straight to the top of SMEs on the ground that if anyone is going to drop £XX,XXX on a domain, it's not going to be the IT guy, but going to be the boss/owner deciding that he wants dinner party bragging rights w/ a killer domain.

If it's a top-tier quality generic domain name that's on target to the audience, why not print it in big friendly letters on the envelope itself?

Most companies will at least want to take a peek at what their "competitor" is up to, especially one they may not have come across before. And when they find out it's actually a vacant URL just waiting for them to snap it up, well they just may breathe a sigh of relief as they write out a cheque...

@Edwin - agree, only thought of that once we'd already printed the envelopes.

Domain was in 20 point text as a headline across the top of the cover letter.
