I believe the figures, if you look at this site, they give the stats for one of their pets sites - 1.5 million visitors and 15 million page views per month.

I think dogs for sale could make a cracking site, either as a paid or free classifieds site. You could of course put adsense on it, pet insurance affiliate schemes, sell affiliate products, books, etc, etc.
