Hi All

I know this is a .co.uk focused forum, but I would be interested to hear whether anyone here tries catching .com domains as well?

I'm interested to know whether "one man bands" can compete against the big boys in the .com arena?

The problem with .coms is that market seems to be well and truly sewn up. I often backorder the best drops of the day - but like in admins post last week, you can find yourself in an auction you'll never win - ryainair.com going at nearly £8000 - is a good example

It's been almost a week now since I've seen a decent .com dropping (with ovt) it all seems to be .infos and months since I saw a dictionary word.

The only .com I caught straight - with no competition is in my sig.

Having said that .co.uk's are almost impossible now - it won't be too long before this market is sewn up

I am new to this forum and more familiar with dealing with dot coms than dot co.uk's.

If you concentrate on a niche area where you have more specialised knowledge than most domainers, then you have a better chance of getting ahead of everyone else as a one man band. If you know more about a subject than the next guy, you are more likely to better know the value of names in your specialist area.

Having said that it is becoming extremely difficult to get decent names for reg fee any more but I suppose it depends on what you are wanting.

For myself I am happy to turn reg fee names into £200-300 a time to an end user rather than going for a £xxxx name and trying to turn it into £xx,xxx, especially since I do not have large amounts of money to invest in names.

Thanks for your input DavidH

Do you catch .COM names on the drop? How does this work with so much competition?

It has now become almost impossible to manually catch anything on the drop, especially with the name mining companies registering anything that moves on the drop day to see if it has any traffic, before spitting them out again if there is no worthwhile traffic.

I use whois.sc a lot to research what is available in a chosen subject and try to find dot coms that are free where other extensions already have active websites. With available funds being tight I have to find a way to register names cheaply and be prepared to hold on to them for even one or two years before an end user comes along.

Thankfully I have quite a few names from earlier times when it was much easier for the little guy to hand register anything and these are proving quite popular with end users provided I keep the prices reasonable.

Definitely a case of "speculate to accumulate". I am interested in buying .com's with type in traffic!

Picked up some good expired .com domains for traffic using godaddy backorder system... Now TDNAM is running, I don't bother with it at all...

Just wondering what TDNAM is?

Thanks
Stephen.

It's stands for:

The Domain Name After Market - tdnam.com.

Set up by godaddy.com around April 05 in rsponse to the other 'drop catchers'...

Related to this, can anyone explain exactly how TDNAM works? There is a .com that I'm interested in and the site page says, "This domain expired on 10/14/2008 and is pending renewal or deletion." It has a link to TDNAM too.

I've registered with TDNAM but the domain isn't in their listings yet - any idea how I can work out when it will be?

Sorry if that's a bit of a noob question to be asking.

There are various statuses that the domain has to go through before it gets dropped and can be registered again. I can't remember all the exact statuses and how long each takes, but you're going to have a bit of a wait still.

In the meantime, you should get the domain booked with a dropcatching services.

These links may help you find out more:

Thanks accelerator. I've signed up with snapnames for this one, not the end of the world if I don't get it but would like it.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.
