I see where your coming from, although the money going to Pakistan I imagine is from the foreign aid budget and not the education budget, although saying that it seems the foreign aid budget has avoided any cuts!

"The prime minister, who earlier visited a school and Pakistan's national mosque, also pledged £650m of additional aid for Pakistan's schools system."

Cost of a brand new secondary school in the UK £15-£25 million.

Thanks to PPP, we pay four times that.

How can any Government justify spending £650 million on foreign schools?

And whether it comes from the education budget or foreign aid budget, it is coming from the public purse.

On the surface it sounds like a bad idea. Maybe it's done in exchange for securing contracts etc?

Here's an idea then. Let the arms dealers, etc., who will get the contracts, pick up the tab for the schools.

I see we're bailing out Portugal now, I swear we're in a recession so how's about using our money sort ourselves :???:

If someone says to me 'spare some change ' but I'm struggling myself then I say a firm NO !

Slightly off-topic, as I don't think politics is an area I want to go into on a business-orientated forum... But I will say that I love how the budget deficit/cuts over the last few months has turned a large proportion of the population into economists.

Actually the UK shouldn't be bailing out Portugal, as the UK is not part of the Euro and is not a participant in the ECB bail-out fund. We helped Ireland with a loan, as our neighbour, but it wasn't part of their EU bail out either.

I would suggest it's only "confusing" due to a lack of understanding of the intricacies of foreign relationships.

I'm not even beginning to suggest I understand it either, but I do think the British population are fed biased information from organisations such as the BBC which don't tell the whole story, or even attempt to explain the reasoning, behind decisions such as giving money to education in Pakistan.
