well im slowly learning about all this. And now im wanting to findout of how to get hold of DAC or a DAC..... its still new to me... but im wanting to TRY as im now learning to get hold of domains.... all helpfull advise is welcome... Im just trying tto work out if theres a better way that the hit and hope of pool.com, snapnames.com etc

Thankyou

"The Domain Availability Checker (DAC) is available to Nominet tag holders who are also members"

so i have to find one of these... next question then. where?? any one about here??

i was going to start another topic but i'll post here instead.

the allowance for DAC is 500 requests/min, however work that out for a 24 hour period and that equates to 720000 a considerable about more than the 216,000 rolling 24hr limit.

as i understand it, names drop at anytime of day, so is it just a case of checking less often, (for example, 150 a minute for 24 hours) or is there something i've missed?

Its upto you, you can space it out evenly over the rolling 24 hours or try and guess certain busy times..

I dont think much drops between 2-6am.

ahh got you... i was under the impression name deletion were just set by nominet on a random cron job as such where deleted any time within the 24 hour period.

maybe this is not the case then as like you say i've never heard of anything drop past midnight...

ASFAIK some updates or system stuff happens in the early hours.. but I could be wrong.

The earliest one I've got is timed at 1.53am

Drops are indeed truly random. In fact it is designed in such a way that not even the developers or sysadmins can tell when something is going to drop.

The burst rate of 500/min is because the DAC has a variety of uses, not just drop catching. Some of those others uses require bursting.

what are the some of the other uses of DAC?

If you sell domain names, you might want to have a search function on your site whereby you can put in "cheese" and it checks:

cheese.co.uk and .org.uk and .me.uk

and also creates its own alternatives such as:

cheeses.co.uk (and so on), ukcheese.co.uk (and so on)

The DAC is useful for this as you can query quickly and get back to the potential customer/registrant.
