Class C IPs for SEO

Can someone give me an example of a unique IP but the same class C.

And an example of an IP that is on a different class C.

SAME CLASS C
128.66.34.1
128.66.34.2
128.66.34.3
(i.e. last digit only is different)

DIFFERENT CLASS C
128.66.34.1
128.66.35.1
128.67.34.1
64.38.23.1
(i.e. any one or more of the other 3 digits are different)

Thanks Ed - makes sense now!

I guess if each number can go up to 255, then I can see why you can have 255 different IP addresses on the same class C.

Any thoughts on the benefits of hosting on the same / different Class C, especially if you want to link between?

A particular class C is almost inevitably owned by one hosting company, so it's a big red flag to Google saying "These sites may be related".

Of course, Google isn't stupid (they will no doubt be looking at the ownership records for all IP blocks), but if you're on totally different IP addresses that's at least a small step towards "separating" the websites to be linked.

loads of these

This is what people do:

Buy 10 such accounts via 10 different companies that have different data centres. Register the whois data in many different names and buy the domains via different companies on different days/months/years ( again you could use only a handful of registrars to ease management as about 10 registrars control the market).
Make sure to mix up the nameservers etc
Link away but mix it with other linking systems

The issue is trying to make everything appear real, so each linking site then has to have the following:

different designs
no common code
wp/joomla/etc/etc

the mix has to be the same as the view of the internet that google has. Then simply you rank.

I have known people who have spent millions doing this...but the results are very interesting to say the least.

The costs involved to do it well in aggressive areas are huge and so generally the sites that make the money are brilliant., because the costs to make that bit work are cheap.

Hope that helps

Not forgetting that classless routing has been in effect since 1993, would you trust a company selling something which has been depreciated for 18 years? Does that not say something about the advice to host on multiple class C networks (ie it is very out of date and irrelevant now)?

What he says^

Along the same lines we could all worry less about gaming G and more about creating excellent link worthy content.

Apologies in the morning! :)

My comment was aimed at my frustration in doing business on the net these days, not at the OP, and was fueled by one too many beers in memory of my late father. Happy father's day Phil.

Doug,

Yes I know that, hence my drunken posting. When I started building sites in 2003 it was because I needed a business that was totally flexible time-wise due to my daughter being ill. It was a field that a one-man band working nights and early mornings could compete in, with a bit of intelligence and luck.

Now even in my very small financial niche that pays the day to day bills link buying is a necessity, so the business is becoming dominated by those with large budgets that can afford a G penalty if their rule bending is discovered. My eyes were finally opened a couple years ago when I was offered links on national newspaper websites. I'd hate to guess your linking budget.

This is partly why I am spending so much time on the geo niche (if it fails then I have a couple of others to try). At the moment in the local space I can rank top of G page 1 with no link buying - just like the good old days! If I create truly compelling local content (don't look on my current sites, it's not there yet) then I can compete with much larger sites who produce crap but buy lots of links. With our consumer caps on (not our site owner's) aren't we all getting fed up of the G results showing page after page of commercial crap?

There are many MANY examples of companies that have 6+ of the top 10 with cross linked websites all on the same class C and all on the same whois.

Where this footprint becomes relevant is if one of your sites is really very low quality. Google look into it, see it's cross linked with other low quality sites, or same targeted keyword, see 1 person owns them all - then dump all the sites.
