Broadband Speed

I was using BT, sure they were capping it at 4meg, even though we were paying for 8meg. Just moved to sky, solid download speeds of 950kb/s, bad BT! :p

I've been wth sky for a few years now and rarely had a problem, always get full download speeds (about same as you) no matter what time of day.

However, it's not been that good last two days for some reason, but 99.9% of the time it's been brilliant.

BT infinity are launching in my area next month and very very unsure if worth the gamble to swap.

I live out in a small town so my internet is shocking 2 megs at best

that aint that bad

With ote in crete last check i did despite paying for 24mb line was 1.6mb up 0.26mb

now im back in u for a couple of weeks and getting 9.69mb

my stats:

download = 0.36mb
upload = 0.24mb

and thats without the xbox/laptops etc running :(

I recently moved a mile closer to my exchange and went from 4 meg down to 1 meg if I was lucky. ISP (freedom2surf) gave me loads of bullsh*t reasons for it so I cancelled and went with Xilo, switched it over and went straight up to 7mb and been stable ever since.

Cost me 11 months of subscription to leave f2s though!!

@ Aaron, I use to be on BT in Hastings, no problem with 3 laptops working at the same time, I think we were on up to 20mb and it used to give us this speed from a previous test I posted on here:

http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/general-board/63176-anyone-elses-broadband-slow-today.html#post227512

As that's all the local exchange was capable of, so depending on where you live and how up to date your exchange is, speeds would vary up to 20mb.

The most we can get here on Eircom is up to 3mb on our line, it's sometimes a bit slow with 2 laptops on, but if using 3 the third one as well, that lags very badly and is almost unuseable:

Happen to have a LL here:

Home I get 2Mbps down and 500kb up but I do live in the middle of nowhere.

esclipse with static ip. Not bad for the area & distance to exchange.

Ours at home usually runs at 18 plus on BT, must be as i'm at home today running spotify maybe? But reckon I would swap that for the 7-8 mb upload.

Can someone explain exactly what upload and download speeds are, I assume download is the amount of time it takes for a webpage to load? But upload, is that if I upload something to the internet like a video or music? :confused:
